So I thought the idea of having two more rod holders in the back of the boat sounded good. I could use the rod storage as my boat looks like a porcupine heading over the bar.

I bought two straight combo rod holders/cup holders to fit in the stern cup holder holes. I also bought the stainless backing plate. When I took them to the boat I found the cup holder hole was slightly to large. The screw pattern will not allow me to install the combo rod/drink holders.

The boat is a 2007 Marlin, and the two holes are located forward and to the side of the fish box.

Any ideas on how to approach this issue?

Sure, that's one way to do it. The only thing I would add, unless I missed it (I only looked quickly on my phone), is that given the thickness of the epoxy, I would add some chopped/cut-up strands of glass. Epoxy gets brittle when it's made in thicker quantities by itself. That'll add a lot more structure to the area. Wet the existing glass with unthickened epoxy then add the glass and cab to your pot and spoon it in. One other thing I'd do is to first gently chamfer the underside and topside of the hole edge (thick "hour glass" shape). If you really wanted to get crazy, you could drill about a half dozen 1/4" deep holes into the cut edge of the hole using an 1/8" drill bit.
