The horn on my 22 seafarer needs to be replaced. How do I access the wiring above the cabin liner? How has anyone else replaced the horn? Do you solder the old wiring directly to the new horn connector or run the new horn wires and how??
I found that the easiest way was to just remove the horn from the topside and replace it there. Like you, I also didn't see access from the cabin.
When you remove the old horn, there should be enough slack in the wiring to reattach the replacement horn wiring. I used crimps and shrink-wrap. When reattaching the new horn, I used the Dow silicone caulk in almond color. It's a decent match to the GW color.
If your cabin has the monkey fur liner, just pull it back to access wiring. Then use some silicone - whatever you have in a tube laying around, to bond it back.
I had to do the horn twice so far, each time had to make splices in the cabin, as they were orginally done.
My 228 doesn't have the "fur" liner either. It is vinyl like yours. Thats why I went with the method I described previously. I do want to say there was not much slack in the existing wiring when I pulled the old horn but it was workable. So far the replacement has worked just fine after probably almost 2 years.
For what its worth, I have a personal opinion about these horns and that is they "seize up" if you don't use them - especially in a saltwater environment. I make it a point to sound the horn at least once every day we run the boat (where sounding it won't cause a problem with another boater becoming startled). I THINK that has helped the replacement horn continue to work.
I am having difficulty removing old horn. As you know, there are two screws; one on top into the block only and the one on the bottom that goes through the block and through the ceiling of the cabin secured by a small nut. I have loosened the screws but they will not come out. Any suggestions?
