Hi,

If it applies to your state, you may be required to register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry. Go to https://www.countmyfish.noaa.gov/
to see if you need to register. If you fish in federal waters, you will need to get a license. For 2010 it is free, but there will be a charge after that ($15-25).

Does anyone have further info? If a state has a license program, do you still need the federal one as well?

This is for the Massachusetts guys but other states may be similar.

http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dmf/recreationalfishing/rec_license.htm

It's my understanding that we (Mass guys) must register this year because our state does not yet have it's own permit program, but in 2011 we will be federally compliant with our own fishing conservation program and will not have to register again with the Feds. Next year it will not matter if you have a tuna permit or only fish federal waters, if you land fish in Mass, you will need to hold a Mass permit.

Saltwater Fishing Registry Question

It all depends if your state that requires a saltwater license has reciprocity with the Federal Registry. Not all states do. If you go on the count my fish website you can plug in your info and it will tell you if you need to register or not.

Does anyone know if the tuna/shark permit will still be required?

Yes, but if you are fishing under a permit you are exempted from having to register on the federal registry.
Go here and answer the questions:
https://www.countmyfish.noaa.gov/

This is correct, the name on the tuna permit is exempt but since most of the time I'm fishing with the 'Boss', she must register. Also anyone else who is on your vessel. The big question is, "who is responsible for making sure everyone on board has a permit?"

Since I don't want to get into any argument about the law with an over zealous 'water cop', I registered myself even though I have a tuna permit. It's free this year and next year I won't have to be on the federal registry since Mass will have it's hooks in me and everyone else.

Hi,
I may be a little slow or the web site is not clear. Pls bear with me.

This year I registered on the fed site (since my state does not have a registration program). Do I still need a tuna permit?

Next year, I register in my state program and this will automatically register me in the federal program. Do I still need a tuna permit?

If I obtain a tuna permit first, do I still need to register in the state?

Thanks guys!

If you fish for tuna, you need a tuna permit - period.

If your name is on the Tuna permit, you are exempt from the Federal registry.

If your state is on the list of qualifying states and has a Federally compliant program and you register with that state, you are exempt from the federal registry. You still need a Tuna permit to fish for Tuna.
