I am planning on buying a Grady White Seafarer 228 with a four stroke 225 HP Yamaha engine. I need a trailer and question the weight carrying capacity of it. Will a 5000 lb trailer do the job?

When I owned my 228, with a F225 and T8 kicker, I calculated my boat to weight about 5,300 lbs. full of fuel (I had the Aux. tank as well).
I would think you'd want a two axle trailer, with disk brakes and a 7,500lb. capacity to allow for extra safety. Best to talk to an objective trailer shop about it but 228's are heavy for their size (a good thing BTW).

You will want to have about 10-15% fudge factor in the trailer. It is always better to have a trailer that is overbuilt than underbuilt for the load. When I was shopping for my 208 trailer I went with the 5400# instead of the 4600# because it was only another $600 and it would give me peace of mind.

Also, another thing to think about is if you take it on trips. Its good to have a little extra capacity to store items in the boat for trailering if you need to. I sometimes put our sleeping bags, tents, and other camping stuff in the boat to leave enough room for the heavy stuff in the bed of the truck.

Just my two cents :)

Trailers are like tow vehicles - should be under 80% capacity. They really don't tend to be under-rated, either of them.

Do a search on trailers, or browse - there are several threads going on the subject currently.

My 228 and aluminum trialer weighed around 6500lba at the wiegh station. The trailer weighs around 1000lbs. Your 5000lbs capacity trailer (even assuming that refers to what is on it and not including the trailer) might be a bit light.

bigger the better

add fishing gear and gas and let say you went camping over the weekend and you put all the camping gear in the boat

6500K is pushing it

160 gallons of gas, at 8 lbs, is almost 1K, add almost 4K for boat and your at 5K

then the motor, say 6-7lbs, your at 5500

then add all you fishing weights, ice and gear, another 1k

go 7k
