I just had my F225 serviced for the season by an authorized tech. In checking the work (oil level, etc.), I noticed that the red ring on my secondary filter (the one inside the engine cover that shows if there is water) is askew -- not floating level. It looks like it came off the piece it is supposed to straddle.

I have read the description in the manual about how to get the filter off, but I am not very handy. Also, I am not sure how easy it will be to get that red ring back where it is supposed to be.

Asked the tech about it and they told me that the red ring doesn't work with E-10 and they usually take the rings out. Anyone heard that?

Any advice on how easy or difficult this is for a non-handy owner?

Thanks.

I don't necessarily agree with your service tech. Even with th E-10 fuel, if water makes it to that filter, that O ring should float and show a seperation. The most important thing is to keep after your primary filter/sepearator. Hopefully your using a Racor.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the red O ring being out of skew, but if you feel the need to correct it, it's not a big deal to service. While your at it.... if you haven't changed that filter cartridge in a while, you might as well replace it.

On top of the filter housing there's a bolt. It holds a bent metal tab. This is a lock, which holds the locking ring in place. Remove the bolt and tab, and unscrew the locking ring. The transparent bowl should now fall off. The filter cartridge may be stuck to the top of the filter housing. If it is, leave it there, unless your replacing it. The O ring and a plastic piece with a spring should be in the bottom of the bowl. Empy everything, reposition the O ring and plastic piece. You should be good to go.
If you have to re-attach the filter cartridge, it can difficult. It has it's own O ring and is a tight fit. Sometimes it's easier to line up the cartride, (with the top) while it's in the bowl, and by simply tightening the locking ring, it will re-seat itself.

One other thought - With this e-10 fuel, I've seen the large O rings, from the top of the Racor filters, swell up a good deal. I wonder if that's what's happening to the red O ring in the Yamaha filter, causing it to sit a skew? It's one thing when an O ring is pressed into a slot, or trapped between two parts.... it has no where to go, but free floating like that.....? I guess one way to tell would be to compare yours to a new one.

Read my post on CW about ethanol containing fuel. There are some major issues out there that no one is talking about.
