A while back I posted that I blew my engine on my 1987 24 Offshore with 2003 225 Suzuki outboard . First off, thanks to those of you who suggested I contact my insurance company. They sent an adjuster out and they will be paying the claim. It would have never occurred to me that it could be covered. Now the bad news, the damages exceed the stated value on the policy. I can either take the 10K of stated value and scrap the boat or take 8.5K and keep the hull and re-power. The hull is in good shape for its age, taps out fine. Any advice would be appreciated. Either way we want to stay with a Grady.

There is no decision to make there. You get the hull for $1,500. It is certainly worth that. If you don't want it, then take the $8,500 and give me the hull, I'll make up the difference. Hell, I'll even give you 500 for your troubles. Even if you don't repower (which you could do for less than that 8,500 if you go with a used 2 stroke), you could sell the boat as is for more than 1,500. I really for the life of me can't comprehend giving the boat away for the 1,500.

If the hull is n a good shape and you like the boat, take the 8500 bucks and see if you can find a nice 200 HPDI, will be much less than 8500 . If you take the 10 grand, what happens to the boat, do they take it? Maybe you get to keep the boat but have to re-register as home made or something like that?

For $8500, your options in the used single engine market are about endless. Two years ago, I bought two '00 200 OX66s and all new controls, rigging, gauges, etc for about that much.

I would look for the newest 225/250 OX66 you can find. Heck, start calling every dealer w/in 500 miles and ask them about leftover new. You might get lucky...

What is your preference in terms of manufacturer?

Trayder on THT is selling a pair of super clean Evinrude 225 Ocean Pros for $6000.

Interesting on the insurance part, was the claim due to an accident or just simply running the boat and the motor blew?

(btw, what insurance company.....I like the sound of that kind of coverage)

I know in the past, when my sister wrecked a car, my dad accepted the claim from the insurance company for total loss and turned around and bought the car BACK from them dirt cheap for parts.....may be an option, its gets it off the insurance company's hands fast and EZ if they'll do it?

We're going to keep the hull and trailer for the 1,500 (pretty much a no brainer). I've made a few calls looking for a dealer with old stock looking to make a deal, have a couple of leads.

The insurance company is Boat US, they have been great to deal with. Thanks for the feedback.
