Does anyone have the length needed for a new steering cable for the 226 and is there a preferred brand of cable? Thanks for your help... Walt

It may be printed on the cable sheath. Look at both ends if you can get to it.
Before replacing the cable though, you may want to make sure it is your problem. If steering is had in both directions, you can disconnect the steering cable at the motor and check that the motor itself swings freely. They can bind up.
If steering is had in one direction only, most likely your trim anode on the LU needs adjustment ( or replacement if the fin is worn away.
Also when you disconnect the cable at the motor, you can see if the steering at the helm still binds.
The steerin box could be bad also, The wheel shaft bushing has a tendency to wear out.
