I need some help from the experts.

I am currently looking at buying a Grady white 19 ft tournament. I have priced many used options and would like to know if there is any opinion on the newer models say from 1994 vs. the older models going back to 1985.

I see a design change was made in 1994 to the tournament 192 with the built in swim platform. Are there any other considerations or things to be aware of ?

I have my eye on a 1985 tournament 190 in good shape with a 1999 Suzuki 140 HP and a 1994 tournament 192 with a 1994 150 Evinrude.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Any one have any advice?

Any advice ?

The boats seem very similar other than the rear and the bow rails

I have also seen a tournament 197 with an inboard.

I like the smaller design with no cabin.

anyone with advice would be appreciated

thanks

I bought a 1985 Tournament the same size 2 years ago- it has been the best boat I have ever owned. That is saying something as I have owned somewhere around 35 boats in 35 years of boating and fishing!!! I prefer the look of the older boats to the newer ones, just one man's opinion. Outstanding ride, planes easily, stable in the wind for trolling, lots of room, far roomier than the 19' SeaSwirl I had before this, way way way roomier than any of my Starcraft Islanders, better than my 2 GLS's, just an outstanding boat all the way around.
One man's opinion.

I'll put it to ya this way... I had my 1995, 192 up for sale (on this site as well) and had MULTIPLE SIGHT UNSEEN OFFERS for 16,500 after about a week on CraigsList but decided not to at the last moment. In California, Gradys are a rare site compared to the Ease Coast. The 192 is just too good of a fishing, crusing, diving and all around boat for the family. If I do sell it it'll be for a 208 but I'm in no hurry. Also, according to everyone I talk to, the newer hull design is a much better ride all around that the older gradys - I have no idea why though. I belive the 1985 may not incorporate the new hull design. Rock solid boat in my eyes. Get the newer boat with the newest motor and have fun... Let me know if you have any questions! By the way, now is a greeat time to by a boat on the cheap based on our economic situation.

Thanks,

Jeff - SoCal

I have a 192 with a 150 four stroke. 17" pitch painted stainless prop (I polished the paint off once it started looking ugly. Top speed is 44mph at about 5800 - 5900 rpm.

Tournament 19 1985

I have a Tournament 19 1985 with a 140 hp 4-stroke on it and it has been a good boat! Fish, ski, puz around, and camp does all well. I want to SCUBA dive and crab it but have not yet. It had a rough life but is going strong with repairs here and there. If I had to do it all over again I would have paid less with out old 2-stroke that was junk.

Go for the newer Tournament. Grady came out with the Sea V2 hull in 1992-3 which offers a better ride with the variable pitch hull design by Ray Hunt.
If you can possibly swing a few more dollers, see if tyou can find a 1996 or newer Tournament 225. The increased size and stability will be substantial and more enjoyable.
Keep us posted on your final decision with a few pics.

Bought the 190

OK

I ended up buying a 1985 Tournament 190 with a 1999 Suzuki 140 HP.

I had the boat checked out and no major issues. It does need a little TLC, mostly clean-up. the bottom paint that was on it needs to be re-done and the jump seats are after market. In the end, I paid $4,000 for the boat motor and trailer, Fish finder, Radio and life jackets.

I took it out for the maiden voyage yesterday and all went well.

Now, I can use it while sprucing it up.

I wold like to put original Grady stuff in tt such as jump seats and maybe the cooler. Can you buy them direct or is the typical aftermarket the only stuff available ?

When it`s done, I figure I`ll put another 2k in it and it will be in great shape. I could not find a newer tournament for that price that did not need work as well.

I did look at the larger models and figure that will be next after I get this one out of my system.

I`ll send a picture when I get a chance.

$4,000 ! You made the right move. That's a good price. You have lots of room for upgrades and maintenance.
Congrats.
