Trailer Question re GVWR

I keep going back and forth on whether to keep the trailer that came with my boat or sell it. It looks to be in rather good shape, has an electronic winch, 5 good tires, etc.

however, I am thinking of selling it since I don’t need it given I leave the boat at a dock and I don’t have a vehicle that could tow it. The biggest decider, which I can’t find an answer, is how much can this trailer handle.

The GVWR states 5820. Does this include the trailer weight so I need to reduce the trailer from this total?

I have a 228 with hardtop and think this trailer may not be a good match to the boat.

You are correct not enough for your 228 with hardtop, you need a 7000 lb trailer.
GVWR is the total weight of the trailer and load, even an aluminum trailer will weigh 1000 lb or close to it, you boat should be 5300 with water and fuel.

Not a trailer expert so I'll leave that question to others. I would offer that the ability to pull the boat and bring it home is a nice addition, even if you need a buddy to help tow it. I keep mine in a slip 9 months out of the year but I haul it home for the off season to do annual maintenance and upgrade projects or if there's anything that requires more than I can do while it's in the water. Cleaning and waxing is much easier on the hard than otherwise. When we're threatened by hurricanes or tropical storms I don't have to worry about it as I can pull it home and park it in the yard. I trailer it down to VB or up to OC to go offshore. Lots of good reasons to keep the trailer assuming you've got a place to park it and it's determined to be suitable to your boat.

Thanks for the feedback. My thoughts of keeping it are focused on maintenance in the off season and in case of a major storm I can move it by me rather than leaving by the shore area. So...exactly what was stated above.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I have a choice with keeping it as it’s not meant for my boat. Really curious why the previous owner didn’t upgrade as they regularly used it.

A 5820 GVWR is unique. It probably has (2) 3500 lb axles on it which gives you 7000 GVWR. Subtract the weight of the trailer to get the carrying capacity. A tandem trailer in aluminum will weigh anywhere from 900-1100 lbs in that size range. In fact, a number of manufacturers sell 7K GVW trailers that have a net of 58-5900 lbs.

If it’s a 5820 GVW, the net is under 5K lbs....and you are right, it’s not enough trailer.
