Hey guys. My pops and I have a 1999 Chase 263 with twin Yamaha 225 OX66s. Recently I’ve noticed a swell in between the motors and the lovely aluminum angle that Grady uses to finish the transom off has large gaps from the top cap and has pulled through the screws.

I am very OCD about things and this really blows about having to do transom work. I’ve been on the phone with Grady talking with them about the construction of that years transom and materials. I know there are probably 100s of threads regarding this up here But I figured a fresh post would be good. Have any of you had to go through this and if so would you share the process with me? A good friend of mine is in the marine repair business and is wanting to help me with it this winter. What should I look forward to?

Thanks

There's nothing really "new" in the game of transom repairs. Meaning, the threads you found (or can, by searching) will have plenty of info in them to get you going without going through the whoel shebang all over again. Probably the biggest thing you should think about - and this will likely be more up to your friend that is helping you and what he prefers - is whether you want to replace the core from the inside (much more labor, but preserves the look on the ouside) or by skinning the transom glass (less labor, but requires more finesse and finese and finish gelcoat work to make it look liked it never happened). On the other hand, if you're OK with some "scars" (they can be minimal - and "mostly" hidden without too much work), then skinning the transom is the way to go.

Unless you're going to do some work on the interior or stringers I would tackle from the outside. Working on an inside radius isn't fun.
