UPDATE: prop advice 208 with sx150 yami

Folks,I had the pleasure of hitting a submerged something today and bent a blade on my prop. I want to replace the prop and would appreciate feedback on your experiences.
Hull is 2001 208 Adventure, motor is 150 hp SX. I haven'r pulled the prop but if I remember it is the original prop stamped 17M.
That said, my motor wot was about 4800 which seems a bit on the low side but has been like that since birth

I was looking at a Solas 14.5 by 17 in pitch
Does anyone have experience selecting a prop for my config? I do not want stainless, aluminum is my choice.

If you were only turning 4800 with a 17" prop you need to drop down to a 15....either in aluminum or SS.

I'd scour eBay and CL....plenty of gently used props available....someone bought one...it was the wrong pitch...etc....

That has been my thoughts also. I would hope that someone will offer their personal experience.
Although the prop is an Yami, I can not be sure that is was the original prop on the boat/motor since I wasn't the first owner.

I have a 204 and my previous and new motor was mounted in the top hole, all the way down. I just had it moved up one hole and supposedly gained 400 rpms. Will test for myself this week. Check the Yama data sheets on their site, I think they have the 208 with the 150 on there.

I pulled the prop today and it is stainless. It was and has been painted all along and I assumed it was aluminum. I also see that it is 13 3/4 in diameter with a 17 inch pitch.
I am going to bring it to the prop shop and see what they have to say. Hopefully it can be reconditioned ( it is really hard to see any damage but I measured a few spots and one blade is a bit off)
I am told that if needed the shop can alter the pitch too. Let's see what they have to say. I will update in a few days.

I brought the prop a few days ago to the specialists in my area and today I picked it up. Jeez, it looks gorgeous. It needed a new hub ( spun when I hit the log) and a tune up (a blade was a slightly distorted).
I have to wait two days for the new hub to dry/cure before re-mounting. Cost ....about $250, not bad considering a new prop would be $580 based on internet searches. I am confident that this will cure all ills.
I will update in a few days.
I learned something also. If you looked at the prop before tuning, you would have thought that is was used but otherwise perfectly OK which of course it wasn't. Makes one think twice about buying a used prop.

That's good info SeaSick. I'd be a little wary of buying a used prop as you point out. Which Prop Shop did you send yours to?

There's a lot of stuff floating around the Western Sound right now, Ive been lucky so far. Glad to hear that you got it fixed up.

I used S&S in College Point Queens. They have done work on many of the boats' running gear at my club over several decades.

Well, the prop is installed. I was a bit confused when I tried to install the original Yami splined bushing and it wouldn't fit until I realized that the new hub is the same length as the old hub plus the bushing. So no bushing needed. Of course the forward bushing has to be used.
Boat runs fine and vibration is gone. The strange thing is that the boat seems to go a bit faster at idle when in gear. I didn't have my plotter with me for the short test so I can't be sure but is felt that way.
I will do a real test later this week.

Went out for a more extensive trial. prop is working well, no vibration. The upper end seems to have gained 200 revs or so. I guess the tuning changed something or perhaps there was a small distortion of the one blade all the time. The vibration experience was due to the spun hub according to the shop and not the slightly distorted blade. Regardless, I am very pleased with the work and am glad that nothing in the LU was damaged.

Good news, here's hoping you enjoy obstruction free boating from now on! There's a lot of "stuff" floating around the Sound right now, I've really had to keep my eyes open!
