I keep my boat full of gas. When we get warm weather here in VA especially after it has been cold gasoline comes out of the cap and runs all down the side of my boat. I have replaced my stripes 6 times now and got got so sick of it I took all my stripes off. Why in the hell is this happening? This is very dangerous and I don't know what to do.

sounds like you are way overfilling. back down on how much you put in. i certainly would not be topping off in very hot weather unless you are on your way out.

are you able to fill without problems?

I had the same problem with my 2007 Gulfstream.

I don't know why or what the factors that contribute to it are..

Simply shut it off 2-3 gallons before it gurgles up the hose toward the cap.

Check your "Total Fuel Used" gauge on the panel. Note how much fuel you've used..(Ex: 70 gallons.)
With that in mind put 66-67 gallons in..This should leave enough room for expansion in different temps.

The things hold 150 gallons. 2-3 gallons less won't matter.

Elysem it is funny you should ask if I have problems filling up. I could go 9 times in a row w/ no problem, the boat takes in fuel fine. Then the 10th time it might take (no kidding) 50 minutes to put in 80 gallons!!!

I fish offshore alot and sometimes especially lately my boat might sit a long time before I use it, so I fill it up to keep condensation to a minimum and to make sure i have enough fuel.

How would i check to see if the vent is clogged? What is causing my intermittent fueling problems?

i have an '02 gulfstream. the dealer had to remove a foot or so of fill and vent line from the main and aux tanks. it was causing a belly. you may have a similar problem. do you have a single or dual tank setup. my problem occurred when they had to switch the main and aux due to the added weight of the f200's. apparently, they didn't shorten the runs correctly.

When Grady converted the vent from the hull side to integral with fill, I think is when this all started.

You would not believe how fast I can dump fuel in, especially when using 6 gal poly cans, and never use the spigot, just open bore, as if the fuel is going into the bilge from a hole in the deck.

Complain to Grady HQ, a design change may be needed.

You guys with such problems, complain to Grady HQ.

If you have no problem burining the gas, shouldn't be one getting gas into the tank.

How about if your car did this after you bought it?
I'm sure you would raise hell (?)

Assuming a 150 gal tank and a temperature rise of 30 degrees ( you filled with gas at 60 degrees and the tank warmed up to 90 degrees), the tank gas volume will expand 3.1 gallons. That's enough probably to fill up the fill line or vent line, so as stated , don't fill up the tank all the way.

My Sailfish is in the shop right now having the pinstripes replaced for this exact reason, fuel coming out of the filler then running down the gunnel onto the hull. In three years of ownership, this is the first time this ever happened. I haven't changed anything in my winter layup procedure, but I am told it is caused by something I have done.
After reading this thread it is obvious the integral vent is the problem. Being that it is now a closed system, there really isn't a "vent", is there?

The sytem isn't closed I believe. The vent is in the filler tube. Although the cap seems to close the system, it is in fact open to the atmosphere.

My 01 Gulfstream's auxillary tank has the same slow filling issue. I tried to pull some of the vent hose to illiminate any belly, but it seemed to be locked in place by some sealer. I guess I will have to live with it. :(

on mine, they removed the gunwale fills and pulled the excess up and cut it off.

ElyseM, I didn't think of that. I wonder what complications I might get into by removing the fill apparatus to get to the vent hose?

remember, it's up at the gunwale, not at the tank. it's only held on by 4 bolts (and probably some sealant). toughest thing is the reach. you can see it from under the gunwale horizontal rod holder and also from under the driver position. i was actually able to reach in an grab the extra line, so i knew it was too long even before my dealer cut it out (just couldn't tell how long).

you might want to check with your dealer, they probably did this a few times. mine had just finished another one. ron
