Prop suggestion 87 offshore 08 etec 250 ho

The lower the engine the more drag. So the engine lugs harder to turn a given rpm. If it has to work hard enough it will overheat. I agree that the engine should be raised to the proper height before deciding on the prop. But the 17" 3-blade is still probably going to work better on that hull.

    Antenea

I'm almost certain that the lower part is just an extension rather than an active antenna. I cracked one open many years ago that looked a lot like yours. It was hollow and contained only an insulated coax cable that ran up to the junction where the tip is connected. The junction looked like...

Help with removal transom back rest and gunwale cushions on a 2011 GW 228 seafarer

On my 2008 Seafarer, I ripped out the self-tapping screws that hold the rear cushions in place. I couldn't figure out how to get to them. Now I just hang the cushions on with the J hooks and they are easy to remove and replace. They stay in place just fine.

The best way to describe the change in sound with a 4 cylinder outboard is that the sound changes from smooth to rough. It's not necessarily louder. It's pretty amazing how an engine can still run reasonably well with one cylinder not firing. I once had a 140 hp Evenrude 2-stroke that broke a...

So it was a bad plug or a loose ignition wire. I had an F150 on a Key West years ago that lost a cylinder. The first thing I noticed was the change in sound. I slowed down right away so I never noticed a loss of power. In this case, it was a bad coil. If you hadn't yet heard the engine...

It's hard to tell from the angle of the photograph, but the 3rd plug from the top looks like it has a greyer color and less soot than the other ones. That cylinder might be running lean. Possibly a bad but not completely failed injector. Injectors in engines that sit around without being...

That readout is the maximum rpm the engine ever attained. It occurred 3.8 hr after the engine was put in service. The is recorded so a technician can determine if the engine was ever over-revved.

Yeah, there is no way to know for sure. Maybe somebody reved the motor out of the water during a flush. But it looks like the motor was babied during break-in, which is not a good thing. Maybe the rings never got seated. If I had the motor, I would pull the plugs and do a compression test. Is...

The system won't log a time at rpm range unless the engine was run for at least 0.1 hr. The 5429 rpm at 3.8 hr was likely just a full-throttle burst for a minute or so. It would take 6 minutes (0.1 hr) at over 5000 rpm to register on the data logger.

Your record shows that the engine turned 5429 rpm at 3.8 hr during the break-in period. That was on the boat, not with a test prop. So something must have happened since then to screw up your performance. You indicated that the seller performed the 20 hr service just before shipping the boat...

Yep. At this point, a dropped cylinder is becoming more likely. BTW, isn't the engine under warranty? Why not let an authorized Yamaha mechanic take a look at it?

You definitely have a problem. Your engine should be able to turn at least 5500 rpm with that prop and get you a least 40 mph with that prop. GW performance data tends to be a bit optimistic, but here is what they got with your setup minus the hardtop and bow pulpit: 208 Performance Data A...

    NJ fishing reports

The 2 species called bonito are easy to tell apart. Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) aka oceanic bonito have stripes that are parallel to the lateral line. Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) have stripes that run off at an angle. The fish in the picture is an Atlantic bonito.

2000 Grady 192 for 1st boat in PNW?

I ran a 17' Silver Streak in your area from February through July back in 1998. It was a similar performing boat to the 192 although the 1992s I've been in on the Gulf of Mexico have a softer ride than my old SS. I have a few comments that you may find helpful in making your decision: 1...

Questions about buying a 228 Seafarer...

They went with Greenwood transoms about 1998 and have had much fewer problems with rot than the older vintage boats. The transom cap is a design flaw. But if the boat has been kept out of the rain the transom is likely fine. A good surveyor should easily be able to tell if there is water in...

    Sacrificial Anode Skeg question.

Tighten the torque tab anode and see if the problem goes away. I've driven a few boats where the anode was missing or broken off and all that happened was the wheel pulled to one side. I've never been in a boat where the tab could move freely. When troubleshooting a boat problem, you start...

Local Grady White Dealer will not work on my Outboard

Maybe it's a New England thing. I bought my first Grady in 1975 from a dealer in New York. I kept it in Niantic Connecticut, which had a Grady dealer right on the river. They told me they would only service boats and engines for their own customers. They softened that policy a year later...
