I'm new to this fourm, but I reciently made my first grady white purchuse, a 73 166 stingray w/ 76 johnson outboard, I found it un in delaware for 800 bucks... Yeah I know what you thinking... What's wrong with it?...

Well I had to rewire everything, the guy had it a real mess, not that bad, it just had the bow light and stern light, had to reinforce the bow, it just seemed to bend down alittle bit, I built alittle frame underneith it to the new floor. Easy fix.

So the problem is with the transome, I should of looked at it real hard when I got it, I can't beleave I missed it. I just got all gitty when I saw her. Well I got it home and noticed some of the fiberglass flaking on the insided of the transome, well it turns out the uper right corner has some rot in it, and it covers maybe a 5 in hole of exposed wood. The transome seems overall sturdy, and I don't see it being a big problem now, I plan to fix it this winter when I pull it out of the bay. What I plan to do is remove all the inner fiberglass, dig out all the rotted wood, inject that one rot stoppping chemical they sell in the west marine catologe, place in new wood where I cut out the old pieces, than coat it in fiberglass, it sounds easy enough in my mind to do... Haha. Anyone have ant sujestions on these type of transome repairs? I'd rather do it myself than have it done professionally.
Any ideas? I plan on posting pictures, its a real pretty classic boat, nobody will beleave I paid 800 for it. Its worth well more. It runs like a dream too. I use my blackberry for my internet service so when I find a computer I'll post the.

forget piece mealing a rotted transom....cut the whole inside skin off, remove the entire core, grind the inside of the outer skin to accept new epoxy and marine plywood, and re skin the inner transom with new 1700....there are a few guys who recently posted their transom replacement projects...VeroWing is in the middle of his and has posted a ton of progress pics....this is really no place to fool around...do it right.....PS...check your stringers as well while your in there....you may be surprised as its a failry "vintage" boat...good luck and post pics.

Hey thanks, yeah I read a lot of the post and looked on VeroWings link. This will defenitly by my winter project. I'll post pictures as soon as I can. Thanks for the help.

check out Boat Builder Central as well as they sell everything you need for doing this and have a ton of good advice from some guys in the boat building business.....you should get a lot of ideas between this site and theirs.
