Hello all, my '77 GW Pacer 17' bowrider has a Mercruiser 470 I/O that is powered by a Ford 230 I-4 (woof). The hull is still in good shape, but this engine has problems - both inherent and emergent. I am exploring a repower, and am asking those of you with more experience (most of you, no doubt) if you could recommend a new or reman'd powerplant that will require minimal modification. I've looked at the Mercury Marine 3.0L MPI ECT I-4 as well as a reman'd 4.3L and 5.0L. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve

Your best bet would be to discuss your options with a Mercruiser dealer. They can tell you what engine may be compatible with your current transom plate/gimbal housing/outdrive/etc....or if you need to refresh the entire power system.

Brian, thanks for your reply. I contacted several Mercruiser dealers in the area, and of those who actually perform repowers, all said that unless I go back with the same engine (which I have no intention to do), there will likely be structural modifications. None was familiar enough with my boat - one said that he wasn't even born when it was made (Good God, I'm getting old).
So I guess I'm asking if anyone here has ever undertaken the installation of an engine other than the one that originally came with the boat...and what sorts of problems you encountered. BTW, I expect that I would be looking at replacement of both the powerplant AND the stern drive. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

I've Mercruisers in both the 3.0 and 3.7/470/170/190 flavors...but never ran either. The 3.0s were in an old Formula 233 and were coupled to the MR1 outdrives. The 190 was in my 227 and was paried with an Alpha1 Gen 1. I am pretty sure the Alpha lower unit will bolt up to the MR1, but I don't know if anything else is interchangeable.

Do you know what outdrive you have? Take some measurements of your engine compartment. The size of the space available could dictate which route end up going.

What issues are you having with the 470? Charging, cooling, compression? I did some reasearch into that motor after buying the 227 so I know of some of it's inherent problems.

Brian, thanks for the insight. As you probably are aware, the water pump is driven by the camshaft. There are two seals, which I've had to replace once already, on the camshaft between the water pump impeller chamber and the oil galley behind it. The seals eventually harden and leak allowing coolant into the oil galley - an extremely poor design and a potential engine killer. In addition, the previous owner jury-rigged an alternator to the block below and to the left of the water pump when viewing from the front of the engine - apparently to eliminate the infamously unreliable stator charging system. One of the alternator mounting bolts sheared, and I had to drill and tap INSIDE the bolt that remained in the block due to insufficient block wall thickness around the broken bolt. The replacement bolt I used - even though it is a Grade 8 - can't be torqued enough to keep the alternator drive belt tight resulting in undercharging of the battery. I could go on, but you get the drift. If the hull and furnishings weren't in such good shape, I'd probably park it on the trailer on a hilltop and hope for a good electrical storm. So, I'm faced with the dilemma of either scrapping it completely or finding a RELIABLE replacement engine and outdrive. The current drive is an Alpha, but I'd be reluctant to reuse it in an engine swap. I have a line on a 4.3L 4bbl carbuerated engine with matching Alpha Gen 1 drive, but I'm unsure of the motor mount/transom mount matchup. I believe that the existing engine compartment and cover allow sufficient space to accommodate the V-6, but am uncertain about weight, alignment and other considerations. Any suggestions and opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like you have the Breezeworks Low Mount alternator kit on that engine.

If the 4.3 will fit, and you get everything with it, I don't think you'll have any problems. I would expect the gimbal housing and transom plate to fit the existing opening, but you will most likely need to make some changes to your engine mount. The 470 has a single one in the center and the 4.3 probably has one on each side. I would be very surprised if the wiring harness weren't the same.
