I recently purchase a 1986 Grady White Center Console with a 1986 Yamaha. The transom moves slightly when you push on the motor. The transom seems to move at the two ends and the left rear compartment is cracked near the left side of the transom. The previous owner said he removed the cap completely and repaired the transom. I took it to a fiberglass shop and he quoted me $3500 to repair it. The previous owner said that he replaced the transom with two 3/4" pieces of plywood and fiberglass everything. I only paid $1500 for boat motor and trailer. The motor runs great and the hull is in very good condition. I am looking for an inexpensive way to repair the transom.

Are you concerned about the transom breaking? When I bought my 1990, the transom was cracked and taking on water..I monitored the cracks for a month while I ran the boat and at the end of the season, I made arrangements to have the transom replaced. There have been some guys who have reinforced the transom with an aluminum or stainless steel plate....

There is no inexpensive way to repair a transom. :(

Does it look like the transom was repaired? Popping the cap is a big undertaking and it seems to me that anyone who would entertain such a project would be able to fix the transom properly. I could be wrong, but I think he fed you a bunch of BS.

Can you post some pics of the cracked areas and also some looking down into the bilge and aft wells?

I agree it seems you were fed a line of BS. The cheapest way to fix it is to do it youself, you can reinforce the transom but if the middle is mush it will not do any good. Nidiabond is probably the easiest and cheapest way to do it.
