Hi all im new to this forum and looking at my first GW. Its a 1988 242 with a 06 etec 200. From what i have found it seems that it may be fine but im thinking its a bit under power, im not sure...any help is appreciated and im not arguing 4stroke vs etec as i loved my Suzuki but am a believer in etec...thanks

would definitely go for a sea trial before buying, if it's a healthy engine & propped right it might do OK, but if you're going to be running loaded up & in decent seas seems like more power is going to be the ticket. I've got a 242g, hardtop, with an old 2 stroke 225 on a bracket, it does OK cruises 24mph at 4100, wot pretty slow around 37. From what i've been told a 200 has basically the same power curve until you're wide open???

Hi and ty for the info. I found out today that the older 242g was built to use less hp, my local dealer informed me back in the late 80's due to cost of fuel gw made the hull to work with less hp. It wouldnt set any speed records nor would it blow up. He is a big fan of Etec . He also suggested that i have someone go check it on a computer . So that ones on hold i have a line on another a 90 242g with Yamaha ox on it. There is also a 94 dolphin im highly interested in it has twin yamaha 200 saltwater series 2 carbed...on a good note E10 doesnt affet these carbs but they like to drink fuel...

thats true about the older hulls - they made the change to the new Sea V2 hull around 1992, a little heavier & deeper v boat.
My 242g is also a 1990, I'm at least the 3rd owner. Pretty sure my 1996 Johnson has a lot of hours on it but can't say for sure, still runs good for a smoky noisy 2 stroke.

I repowered my 1984 Seafarer (22 footer) with a 300 Verado. I run 48 mph with men, 5/8 -3/4 fuel, and full gear. Hard top, down riggers, etc. Over 50 with lighter loading. Cruise 28-30 mph with 2.76 mpg....6 guys and 1/2-5/8 fuel. I am very pleased. I know the boat will run with less hp, but I appreciate the ability to get over a wave or get out of the hole with out issues.

I have a video here....and you can checkout my YouTube page for other videos.

i think you will be ok with a 200 i think but you might want to run a 15" pitch prop to have better bite and control at the expense of speed.

unless you run at wot, a 200 is going to perform very close to a 225. you'd need a 250 to see any major difference.

most outboard makers historically had 3 sizes of v6 block: typically a small block used for 135/150/175 hp motors . mid block used for 200-225 and big block for 250+. among the engines using the same block size the difference in the horsepower is due to the maximum air/fuel supply which mainly impacts the highest rpm the engine can attain under a given load. at any given rpm below say 5000 rpm a 200hp should in theory be almost identical in performance to the sister 225. the 225 will be able to achieve a few hundred more rpm at the top end. .
