Has anybody here installed a twin bracket on an older 228 and mounted twin engines .? I'm wondering what the weight limitations are of the factory single bracket ?

The thing I was thinking is to mount a twin outboard bracket and 2 F115 engines on the back , or is this just a bad idea . or should I just stick to a single F225 or F250.

Look at the catalog for your year hull. My father has a 1991 228G and I have that year catalog and a 1993 catalog saved and I just looked at those. The Pre SeaV2 (1991) had an option for transom modification for the 226 for twins listed, but not the Grady Drive for twin option for the 228G, but the Offshore does have that option. The 1993 catalog for the SeaV2 hull did not have that option. 1992 was the first year for the Seafarer for the SeaV2.

The 1991 228G we have has a 250hp OX66 and it pops the boat on plane pretty fast. I'm sure you could get a bracket for the twins, but we are happy with the 250hp.

You know I have long wondered the same thing. It would be cool to have twins on the boat. The narrow stern seems to be the issue I would imagine. Twin 115s would be nice for redundancy and safety. Though I must admit having a single keeps you on your toes in terms of maintenance and service because it is the only motor you got to get you home.

I have a 1988 seafarer 228 with bracket. Upgraded back in 2003 to a honda 225. The boat is definitely a little stern heavy and I would not recommend any more than the 620 lbs of that Honda.

Well I'm going to look at a 226 now . I wonder if I put a bracket on it with twin F115's would that be just too much weight ? That is around 772Lbs. . Some brackets are considered flotation brackets , But I still don't know if that would matter or not . I just love the idea of twins on the boat for safety off shore and ease of navigation around the docks .

Check to see if the fuel tank is between the front seats like my 228. This helps offset the weight of the engine. I think some models have the tank more toward the stern. I take mine 40-50 miles offshore, modern 4 strokes are ultra reliable, if you are going to have problems is more likely electrical or fuel related which would effect both outboards anyway.
