1990 Gulfstream anchor locker

I have a issue withe the locker itself. I have a piece of vinly in the cabin that snaps over an 12"x12" opening to the anchor locker.

Water constantly gets in when I stow the anchor, the rode and chain is always against the vinyl and pops the snaps free with the rode ending up in the cabin.

I was gonna install a piece of starboard over the opening and caulk in.

Is there a negative to this or is there a better fix?

I have the same problem, however the opening has come in handy when the rode somehow gets tangled (Rough Seas). I was thinking about making a door with a hinge of some sort with a gasket and wing nut fastener. Kinda interested in what you come up with.
