1993 22’ tournament - speeds?

Hello,

i recently acquired one of these boats and am doing a full rehab and repower. I will be putting either a 200 or 225hp OMC outboard on it, this model has the grady drive set back.

What speeds have folks seen with similiar setups?

The boat wont be in the water for another 6 months, so Im interested to hear what people have experienced.

I believe the 225 Tournament was replaced by the 225 Freedom in 2011, of which the 225 Tournament has a dry weight of 3,000 lbs and a brand new Grady White 215 Freedom weighs 3,150 lbs. On the GW website it says that a new 215 Freedom with a single Yamaha F200 on it will do a max speed of 42.6 mph @ 6,100 rpm. Conversely, a new 215 Freedom with a single Yamaha F250 on it will do a max speed of 48.4 mph @ 5,900 rpm. They for some reason don't offer the 215 Freedom with an F225 on it, but I'd be willing to bet the numbers fall right between the F200 and the F250. The 215 Freedom is going to be a slightly different boat I believe, but the length and weight is pretty similar, so those numbers should at least get you in the ballpark. Good luck!

1994 226 walkaaround here. ETEC 200HO (218hp). So a bit different setup, but I'm right around 40 wide open. Boat really wants to settle in around 29-30 as has often been said about numerous Gradys. Guessing you could do a few ticks better on top end with the 225hp.

I've owned 4 different 223s and 225s...which are the same hull as the one you are looking at. 3 of the 4 had 225 OX66s, 1 had a 200 Saltwater Series Carb.

You can play around with props and get to 41 mph with the 200....you can play around with props and get to 42.5/43 with the 225. The only way it goes any faster is when it's on the trailer.

Great boats - but they are heavy.....

The boat that the OP is looking at, a 1993 GW 22' Tournament is actually slightly wider than the later models with an 8'4" beam compared to the later versions at only an 8' beam. The centerline length is also slightly longer on the newer models at 22'2" compared to the OP's at 22' exactly. Other things like the weight and hull draft can be, and are also slightly different, though the boats are pretty similar. But they aren't the same or identical, at least from the limited research I've done on them.

I suspect that might be a typo in the 1993 brochure. '93 was the first year of the SeaV2 in the 223/225.

2003 was the first year of the redesign which brought the fold down bench seat aft and the walk-in head compartment, so definitely a different design.

Actually, per the FAQ post on this website, it says that the 22'-25' boats had the SeaV2 hull design change in the 1992 model year.

I have an old (1982) 24 Offshore with a 225 ETec....with just me and a light load of fuel I am getting 38MPH top end....you should certainly do better.

Still incorrect, the beam on the 1993 GW 22' Tournament says 8'4" per the brochure.

I have a Freedom 225 with a 250 and don't know the exact top speed, but it's plenty fast even with the added weight of a hardtop. I'd think a 225 would be adequate. A 200, maybe.

Thank you for all the replies, for some reason I only received a notification for the very first response so just reading everyone’s helpful comments.

I own a 22’ 1986 Seafarer as well (the ‘93 22 tournament is my recent purchase). With that boat I have a 225 OMC mid 90’s motor, propped correctly my best has been 39-41mph in perfect conditions (cool day, light chop). That boat is much heavier than the ‘22 tournament, but also rated for 280hp max.

The ‘93 tournament says only rated to 230hp. Not sure why they reduced max HP rating with the SV2 hull?

On a side note I also own a ‘83 19’ tournament that I rehabbed this summer. That boat is rated for 200HP which I put on it (last year they had a 20” transom). I was able to hit 50mph on the dot with that boat, but I am selling it to upgrade to the 22’ model which is also 10 years newer and much more space for guests.

I havent ridden in a SV2 hull, but sounds like they are a better design so looking forward to trying it out. Now I just need 100 hours to rehab the boat completely……

Fastest in the water GW I've owned was the first one. My 190 Tourney with a Yahama 150 VMax could hit 48.

My 225s all hit 41-42 with 225 OXs. My 205 with an F225 would hit about 46.

Once I forgot to turn the GPS off after I put the boat on the trailer. That GW hit close to 80 going downhill on the interstate.
