I have a, new to me, ‘96 272 Sailfish with twin Yamaha S200TXRU. Anyone with the same or similar setup know the fuel burn and or range at cruise rpm? Also, planning to re power when these die, any advice on motors? Looking to fish offshore in the Gulf so long runs. Any leads on some good used motors is appreciated. Thanks in advance

I have the same boat in the '94 model with basically the same engines. Fully loaded with 202 gals of fuel, 32 gals of fresh water, ice, bait, beer and up to eight people and you can count on 1.0 mile per gallon. A few less people and you might creep up to 1.3 mpg. As for the engines, thought mine would have died two years ago but they are still strong and fire up every time with 1800+ hours. Good luck and enjoy that girl. She can handle a lot more than you can.

If you do end up repowering, you'll find that 4 strokes are the way to go. Far quieter, significantly better gas mileage.

Enjoy that thing!!

Thanks, was planning on 4 strokes. Would like to go up in hp to 225’s or 250’s, if the boat/transom can handle them.

I have a 1998 272. Has OX66 225's then switched to 2007 F250's with 15 1/4 X 17 props. Which is probably the best set up.
Cruise with the 250's 3600 rpm about 24 kts burning 1.3- 1.6 gph depends on conditions
Had a motor issue and i upgraded to 2014 F300 DEC motors. I used my original props. taking out for the 1st time tomorrow.

I find my 3.3L 225s to be TONS of power and reasonably light weight. l could pull as many waterskiers as I wanted. I get 1.8-1.9 mpg @ 28-30 mph. Amazing motors.

Be conscious of how much weight you add when you repower.

Does your 96 have the stepped up hull at the transom as the 94 does? If so, you will want to check with Grady to see what weight that boat hold on the stern. Just a FYI...They told me I could not put the Yamaha F200's on the back of mine due to too much weight on the stern. Right now my only options are the new Mercury series fourstrokes.

Thanks for all the replies. It has the walk through transom/ integrated platform. It sounds like the 3.3L 225s provide the performance/range to get me to the grounds n back, safely

Those are nice - strong and light. The newer 200 4strokes would be a great repower some day...
