im about to buy 1996 islander 268 with 2017 twin Yamaha 200 I ask for opinion regarding wood fiberglass hull construction since the were made with those materials before 2005 how do you check this. Is require special instruments or device use by the surveyor? Thank you. By the way expensive boat for me 54,500

I love my Islander. Perfect for my use case. Just finished half of a makeover including a paint job. Finish up next year.

Get a good surveyor and check the transom out carefully. Seems like all 268’s will need to be replaced at some point. $10,000 job in my neighborhood. Look for any evidence of movement. Cracks in gel coat, well in front of motors. Moisture test with meter.

Ask about fuel tanks too. They are due for replacement. No leaks yet but mine will be done next year.

I paid $55,000 for my ‘97 with ‘06 F150’s in October ‘07.

Thank you very much .I will take all your suggestions into consideration

I had a 1998 268 Islander that I just sold. In 2020 I decided to repower with a 300Hp Yamaha .Prior to install had stern inspected all looked good from the outside however the metal trim along stern was lifting so I decided to have stern redone prior to install of new engine .When they opened up stern it completely fell apart with rot.Prior to purchasing this boat have a survey done look at stringers along stern inside behind batteries.Total cost was 7500 also tanks need to be replaced asap and decks usually have soft spots .Good luck move with caution but I think your paying to much with the cost you may occur going forward.
