This is crazy!! Had the port engine exhaust kit replaced last week and the starboard looks good as new. Both original engines with the boat and both are 02/05’s. Just goes to show you never know!!

Interesting. I've researched this quite a bit as I just bought an 2002 F225 (port engine) from a bigger Grady. It had the exhaust update done. You can tell if you look under the pan and you see some green metal vs the normal Yamaha Grey. Yamaha's update parts are a different color that stock. For whatever reason it doesn't affect many motors up in the Pacific Northwest. I called 3 yamaha shops in the area. 2 had never seen a problem motor, 1 had seen 1. Not sure why. I bought my motor from Canada and it had the update for $5000 U.S. 1200 hours. Looks almost new. No corrosion, hard to believe on the west coast of Vancouver island, almost all salt. The boat is from Alberta though. Do people use 28' Grady's in Alberta? I have no idea.

POTENTIALLY affected motors all Yamaha v6's until 2006. 200's, 225, 250s (Not sure when they started making 300s). This is a dry exhaust passage, flushing won't help. It's more mysterious than that on which motors are affected. Like Above posts say. Only 1 engine had an issue out of twins.

You can get the update kits at: https://www.simyamaha.com/searchresults.asp?Search=225+exhaust&Submit=

$650-$740 depending on year.

Well, I just pulled the lowers off. The starboard looks like new but the port looks like the surface of the moon. It’s crazy in the difference and both are Feb 05 and both have exactly 1523hrs.
The same thing with mine...one corroded through, one like new..(300 hours) 05 motors.

I had one corroded all the way through into the head and one with corrosion in the exhaust. exact same hours - no rhyme or reason

The issue is with the coating. They sell many more CW rotating motors (starboard) so you may have earlier parts in the CCW ones???

Just more info here..

I had 2006 F200's and they had the corrosion problems as well. 1150 hrs or so and they both had to be done.

I replaced both midsections on the f225s (02) my previous boat. The port engine went first and was symptomatic with bubbling around the engine when running and had a different sound to the exhaust compared to the starboard. At the time kits weren’t available and i ended up paying double for the parts. The following year I replaced the starboard engine midesection with the available kit for half the price. The exhaust looked worse then the above pictures. The parts from that engine are hanging up in my mechanics shop on their “wall of shame”. This engine had no bubbling or overheats and was otherwise performing normally. Just goes to show that you never know. I also know of engines(f250s)having problems up to and including 2008 model years. Engine hours and flushing don’t matter with this problem. This has become a routine repair and most dealers stock the kits as well as the oil pan and pump which should also be replaced at the same time. The f225s get a bad reputation for this problem, when in reality they are overall a very good dependable engine.
