Thought I had an issue with my outboard but spray is coming from the trim tab. Nothing appears to be wrong so whybam I getting spray from that area?

Not sure if GW changed something between your 2005 and my 2011, but i don't get spray other than the normal trim tabs do. But i use rarely trim tabs as i balanced my boat so that i don't need them, only if it becomes really snotty.

What outboards do you have mounted?
Have you added drop fins or trim tab is bent or dirty?

Chris

Are you referring to actual trim tabs on the transom ot to trim anodes on the lower units, Also, are both making spray or just one.

It's been repowered with Yamaha 300's. Not fins, tabs are clean.

Interesting, there is a transducer further up around 5 feet, I doubt that could be the issue though.
Should not be a problem, 5 ft is plenty.

Did the excessive spray started just after the repower?
What engines where installed before?
If 2 strokes then the added weight may lead to stern heavy behaviour what can lead to issues like yours.

Would it be possible that you post a photo or video?

Chris

Correct, it wouldn't be from a thru-hull ducer.

Can you take a few pics and share them? It's hard to visualize how much you are talking about and whether or not it's normal.

In the meantime, if you're sure it's from the tab, inspect it really close. There could be something snagged on it... a loose anode... even the tab, itself, could be loose.

Port side only, tabs are tucked under the Hull, hard to figure out the issue but it does spray

Does that area spray all the time or only at certain tab settings? If I understand you correctly, the tabs rest in pockets. Something in that specific pocket could cause spray, for example growth on the pocket surface, a piece of debris caught on the tab or actuator, etc. Also look for dings or dents to the tab itself. It doesn't take a lot to make spray. Finally, if you have sacrificial anodes on the tabs, check for things like mounting bolts for the anodes that are too long,

Is she on a trailer?
If so lower the tabs all down to check them if clean, no potruding bolt/s, etc and not bent and the pockets for growth.

BTW: Does the spray happen with tabs completely retracted, or only if you deploy the tabs?

When retracted, I see nothing that would make it do that.

It's not clear if you inspected when out of the water or not... or just a looksie from the topside?
It was on a trailer and a mechanic looked at it. We both did not see why it would do this. I had the struts replaced, didn't solve anything.

Hmmm. Strange. Were you able to compare to the other side to see if something "looks" out of place? Like maybe the tab is slightly bent and extends out of the pocket just slightly?

Since you replace the struts, I assume the hinge end was checked?

Do both tabs extend and retract the same amount at the same rate?

It was definitely not completely flat, strangely enough though, the other one was worse and appeared as though that one would be an issue but no, fricken frustrating. I'm thinking just replace both of them.

I was kinda curious about that. It COULD be that the other one is off by enough that it's trying to push/list the boat over (lean over) and it's causing the flatter one to dig in to the water more than usual.

For starters, disconnect the strut from the tab mount and move the tabs manually, seeing if you get full movement. Inspect the hinges/etc really well.
