Hello, this is my first outboard in many years. 2005 Sportsman with 150 Yamaha with 360 hours. When I take it out of neutral and either into forward or reverse, the gears grind . If I try to shift quickly, it’s a little better but still grinds. Is this normal? Any suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks. Bob

Some grinding is normal. You need to make shifts not too slowly but rather quick. You want to engage the gears as soon as they start to mesh. Prolonged grinding can damage the gears

If you hear di dit clunk you are shifting correctly. If you hear dit dit dit dit dit...clunk, you are shifting too slowly.

Does it grind equally going into both forward and reverse? If it only grinds in one direction it could be a simple shift cable adjustment. I don't remember if the 150 has an adjustable shift rod. Unfortunately, if that is not the case the lower unit will need to be torn down to find the cause, which could be anything from a chipped tooth to a bad shim job.
