I am not sure what fuel condition or contaminants causes that but I feel that if you don't know if and when the filter was ever replaced, buy a new one and why you are at it, but a new ridiculously over priced o-ring for the cover. Reusing an old one can be very frustrating since the gasket always seems to be too big to fit in the groove ( ok, you can try the freezer trickOn rare occasions, cleaning the vst filter did not work. I’ve had to replace the filter to get it to pass sufficient fuel through. I usually put new ones in the first round so I know it is going to be ok.
