Looking to repower my 89 Overniter. Has the original 175 Yamaha 2 stroke. After much investigation, looks to me like the best choice, weight being a huge issue, would be the Yamaha 150 4 stroke.....rather not go 2 stroke again. Anyone done this repower?.....How is it working for you?....Which prop are you using?.... Any input appreciated!!

I don't think you will be happy with that choice. In addition to less horsepower, that motor is heavier. If the stern sits low, you may need to add weight forward to trim the hull down. All those factors added up will seriously affect performance.

Just did my 86 with a 200 optimax. I am partial to the 2 stroke. 500 lbs or so top end is a little over 40 mph. Cruises at 3300 or so rpms at about 25 mph. Running a 4 blade prop and getting about 3.5 mpg. Couldn't be happier

I think you need to look at a 200 HPDI. The weight is an issue with the 4 stroke.

Brian is correct. i have an 88 Overnighter that i repowered with 200 HPDI in 2002. Could not be happier with the set up on the boat. When I looked at repowering I narrowed it down to a 150 4S or the 200 HPDI. I think I made the right choice.

Thanks guys......I'm in California.....HPDI is no longer available here. If you have a 200 Yamaha 4 stroke, aren't your scuppers underwater with this older hull? Thinking that weight along with acouple of big guys in back fighting fish it could be a problem. The Suzuki 175 4 stroke is another good option.....if Yamaha made a 175 4 stroke 4 cylinder I'd jump on it. Maybe they will. 175 E-Tec would work as well. Rather stick with Yamaha if possible....I won't own a Merc again.
I have a 1991 Overnighter with the factory hardtop. Last year I repowered to an 2011 ETEC 150. Great fit for this boat. Plenty of power. Boat cruises well in the low 30s mph and can hit 40 WOT. I also run a Yamaha T9.9 kicker for trolling. Boat sits nice and level in the water and the scuppers are not underwater. Plenty of power for fishing and cruising Puget Sound. I run the 100 grade ETEC oil only. I am very pleased. Nothing against 4 strokes, but I think for an older boat like this, they are a bit heavy. I also got a great deal on the motor. Free ss prop, and controls, compliments of BRP as a part of their repower special. I also got a five year extended warranty at no additional cost.
Yamaha discontinued F200 and F225 several years ago, only original F250 mechanical controls available. Larger replacement F225, 250, 300 for sale all electronic controls. Yamaha does not offer a 175 and 200 4 stroke.
Suggest Suzie 175 and whatever Verado has in HP range.

I have a 1990 Overnighter and am happy with my Suzuki DF175 (4th full season). Can go ~35mph (2 people; gear and 40 gals of gas). Engine weight is 481 lbs, my scuppers sit halfway in the water at the dock.
