What you are describing does not sound normal. Did you look in the bilge to make sure there wasn't water in there or the livewell or washdown pump weren't pumping into the bilge? That would add a lot of weight especially if the bilge pump wasn't working or couldn't keep up. Something sounds peculiar so you are right in being concerned.
