I have a 151/2 17 sws prop and have been having the in gear idle “chatter”, I have read where switching to a different prop would cure that... also I am only getting 5400 rpms and 36 mph at wot. That was with two people and almost a full tank.. was thinking I am over propped but suggestions on where to go..any ideas appreciated..

I have a 99 222 Fisherman with an OX66 225. I am no prop expert, but I am getting 43MPH with 3 people and roughly 3/4 tank of fuel. The boat is new to me so I only ran WOT one time and the conditions were OK when I did. It was slightly windy and a little chop in the water if this helps.

F225 should be closer to 6000 RPM at WOT. Your speed should also be in the low 40s.

Are you trimming the motor up or is it all the way down to get 5400? What happens when you trim it up a bit?
Are you reading speed from a GPS or from the speedo on the dash? If it's on the dash, the pitot hole in the front of the lower unit may be clogged and you are actually running faster.
What kind of shape is the bottom of the boat? If you have a lot of growth, the drag can slow you down.

Thanks for the reply’s... yes, I was tweaking the trim, speed was read from gps(it’s about 2mph diff on yam gague) I have bottom paint but the bottom is in great condition..never stays over for more than a day or two ..

previous owner said he was getting low 40’s with it but couldn’t remember rpm... its not missing or running rough, all fuel filters are always changed every year,...

Try just you in the boat, with minimal gear and calm conditions. That eliminates a lot of variables. Next, it's not clear "how" you tweaked the trim... continue to trim up till the spped no longer increases or the prop starts to ventilate. The point right before that happens is your max. If the previous owner was getting low 40's - which would sound about right - and you haven't changed the prop - then either it's the way you're running the boat (or lot's of extra weight) or there's an issue. Is the prop in perfect shape?

I’m running it and trimming it to what it will take.. it acts as if it has more to it but just doesn’t turn any more rpms .. which is weird because it is the same prop and it looks to be in fine shape. I’m not prop savvy but I know about mechanics of outboards so I may pull injectors and clean/test them .,(I do have a injector machine ). although it’s running fine. I will try it with just myself as well. I’m just curious because I want to make sure it’s running at optimal rpm.

How old is the gas - and was it properly treated?

To eliminate fuel quality, run the engine on a portable tank. That's easy enough to do and eliminates other variables, as well.

Fuel was good,.. use it a lot. Engine never really acted like it needed attention, but I pulled and cleaned injectors anyway... after that, got my rpms and speed back. Thanks for all suggestions..
