222 With 200 Yamaha

I am thinking of buying a 2002 222 with a 200 Yamaha. Most of the other 222's I have seen have larger motors. Any comments on whether this motor is enough power.

My 225 with a 200 SWS tops out at 41 and cruises comfortably at 28-30.

The F200 is a strong motor....the F225 is not. It all depends on what you plan to use the boat for...

All the 222's I've seen have either a 225 or 250; never have seen one with a 200. I would think the 200 is going to be a bit underpowered for the 222, especially if you have a number of people on the boat. Performance with 1 or 2 people is going to be a lot different than with 6 people.

My 250 on that boat gives top end around 48 and cruises at 30 at 4000 rpm with 2 of us on the boat. Gets up on plane quick too.

I had a 1988 211 Mako with a 18 degree deadrise hull, 2400#, 86 gallons of fuel and I repowered from a 225 Optimax to a 200 Yamaha HPDI and I had not difference in performance and the 200 was more than enough power for that boat. I probably should have gone with the 175 Suzuki 4-stroke. My Mako cruised 25-30 mph, fast cruise was 35 and she topped out at 40 mph..on the ocean, faster than 27 mph was very uncomfortable.......

Is this a 200 hpdi, OX66, or a F200? If it is a 2 stroke it Feel it would be fine. If it is a 4 stroke might be a little sluggish. I have owned a F200 and currently have a 200 hpdi and it runs rings around the f200.

I second what grady_crazy said. 4-strokes don't have the low end torque that the 2-strokes have. The 4s might top out higher at WOT, but who cares. the fuel efficiency of the fuel injected 2-strokes is as good if not better in some cases as a 4s as well. Bottom line, a 200 2s is fine, 200 4s might be sluggish at the low end.
