225 tournament wot 35mph

Hey guys,

i got a 2005 225 tournament, with a f250 yamaha, wot i barely got to 35mph, no hardtop, no water, no extra accessories. Is this normal? Cause I’ve read on forums most people get about 40mph+. Wondering if my propeller is incorrect, looks like its been replaced. Anyone have the right size propeller for this motor?

-- Do you know what the max operating RPM range is for your engine (you should)? Probably 5K-6K.
-- What size prop is on there now?
-- Is the speed GPS based or boat speedo based?
-- Are you properly trimming the engine? Please explain your process.
-- Is there ANY growth (or even just a little slime layer) on the hull bottom?
-- What kind of weight do you have in the boat?

-both gps and speedometer showing roughly 33-35mph
-I do have bottom paint that im currently trying to remove
-I’m gonna try trimming the engine next week
-weight of the boat not sure all stock, full tank of gas, no freshwater

Are you sure your settings are miles, and not knots?

Bottom paint can still get growth and/or slime depending on it's age and how often the boat is run. BP, itself, is not the issue, though.

Trimming... does that mean you weren't trimming the engine at all (or not much)? If so, you've found the issue... user error.

Yea I was not trimming the engine at all, left it all the way down, gonna try to trim the engine up a bit this weekend

Trim it up A LOT. Till the speed no longer increases or the prop starts to ventilate.

Trim it up...probably to about the 3rd bar on the trim gauge. Your RPMS should jump to 5800-5900. As close to 6000 RPM is where you want to be.

Also - are you getting your speed from the speedo in the dash or from the GPS? If the hole on the front of the lower unit that acts as a pitot for the gauge is clogged, your speed readings will be inaccurate. A small piece of wire fishing leader can be used to clean it out. Use your GPS, or a GPS app on your phone, to get a more accurate indicator of your speed.

Thanks guys for all the help, I took it out for a test run last weekend, trimmed up the motor, did some adjustments, was able to get 40-45 mph. So this was a case of captain error lol.

last speed check I did was 5/5/19......
37 mph @ 5400
41.4 mph @ 6000
1 person, 1/4 tank of gas, about 88 degrees, very light chop, wind calm
all recorded on a GPS (speedo was pretty spot-on though)

That there is the BEST kind of fix - all you had to do was to go for a boat ride! They won't ALL be that easy...

I get the same with my 225.
Sometimes I can hit 43 if I trim it just right.
