228 Bilge Pump

I just purchased a new 228 and seem to have water in the bilge. Is this normal? I washed the deck down but I understand the deck is self draining. I must of pumped a good gallon when I turned on the bilge pump.

I had a wscott working for me, a good friend in Indiana, I'm guessing that is not you but if it is woot woot!

I've been through this and there are two sources. The rod holders drain to the bilge, so if you spray under the gunnels and get water in there, yep. And the cup holders aft, they drain to the bilge. In my case, it was the cover over the bilge, apparently they don't seal that because they leave it open so you can have electronics routed through there. I could flood the deck and it looked like a shower drain. Sealed up and it is fine.

Post some pics, is it a 2020 or did you get used? There is a guy on here who has a 1980's era 228 that he cleaned up, it looks exactly like my 2020, these boats hold up.

My '87 228 Seafarer gets up to 8 tablespoons of water in my bilge after any amount of time and/or rough water. You heard right, most times its like 3 tablespoons.

The only time it is more than that is from a full live well and heavy wave action. Now when it rains out while boat is on dry land, I do get water in my bilge from places like the stanchions since the silicone there is original (more like non-existent).

My guess is alike to what luckydude said, you sprayed in some no-no areas.

Besides rod holders and the aft cup holders, any other areas where water drains to the bilge? I believe my rod holders drain to the deck so not sure that affects my 2000 228

I have a small amount of water in the bilge the last time I checked, but every once in a while I get enough that I can pump out, about a gallon or so...it’s not an accumulation over time though because it’s consistently a very small amount and then all of a sudden it gets high enough.

No not WScott from Indiana. I’m up in Vancouver, Canada. My 228 is a new 2020.
