228 Grady owners experience with In Hull transducers

I have an Airmar M260 shoot through the hull ducer on 08 228. It's mounted in the aft compartment diagonal from the 10 gallon tank . my boat has the gas tank mounted all the way forward and a small square compartment aft of it for the water tank. Works like a charm holds the bottom to 1,000 feet at speed.

It just holds the bottom or can you see any fish at speed? I'm guessing only if they are whales or something?

I have seen fish ,but if you're running 25 to 30 knots they really need to be schooling. it's not chirp ,it's dual frequency. my transducer is from 2009 and my plotter is now 2020 Garmin 942 xs plus. It will drive chirp, side vu and Panoptix plus 50/200hz . So, I suspect new transducers will provide you with chirp which supposedly will give you fish at speed.
 
I kind of wonder if it is the transducer, I think we have the same one, certainly the same brand. Let me go look up what I have...
My model is TM185HW which is a 1kw (I think I misspoke and said it was 1.5KW). Claims to see to 500'.
I have the TM 275, they are both 1kw.
I don't need a side scan, I fish offshore mostly for Marlin and other pelagic fish, sometimes I drop deep at 1200-1500' as well. I can pick up fish at the bottom but I only drive slow when on the deep reefs.
I can pick up bait balls at speed on deep water, when there is bait around usually the predators are around as well.
I was thinking of installing one thru hull but decided on transom as I didn't want another penetration on the hull. I had the same in my old boat and worked well. I have 12" Simrad NSS evo 3.

Thank you SmokyMtnGrady. My Grady is a 2004 model that has the freshwater tank underneath the companion seat. I only have the limited space aft shown in the first post to install the transducer. It's my understanding that using a single frequency transducer would result in a better performance (at speed) than Chirp sonar... maybe I am wrong.
 
If I were to do it all over again, I wouldn't bother with the Garmin next to the plug. That's a "SideVu" thingy, it's mostly a shallow water thing. In theory, I can use it to find bait balls below the surface, in practice all I ever use is the Airmar. Given that wrxhoon and I have the same (or close) transducer mounted in the same place, we both hold bottom at speed, and mine was installed by pros that do this for a living, I'd just get that transducer and put it in the same place, it clearly works. I can take more detailed pics and get you an exact location if you want.

mine will operate at 50/200 simultaneously. is your tank pushed aft? I think KY has the same model year ? If you go external as Glacier said you need to make sure it's in clean water coming off of the hull.

My 2004, the tank is located in the middle of the floor under the deck panel. Pump and fill is under companion helm seat. 20190929_101309.jpg20190420_190640.jpg

You are not wrong. A transducer set to a single frequency (200 kHz) will track the bottom much better at speed than on a CHIRP setting.

My Simrad 3 in 1 transom-mounted transducer does a better job of bottom tracking when set at the fixed frequency. The output of that 2D element is only 300 W. My through-hull Airmar B60 does even better since it has a 600 W element.
 
Can’t imagine why you would want to put another hole in your hull especially when Grady White provides good mounting locations for transom mount transducers. I run a 24’ Offshore with 3 transducers mounted on transom. All 3 transducers read true at 40mph plus. Maybe you have no room on your transom for some reason.

It's hard to see the starboard side height, the bottom of the bracket is about 1/2 inch up from the bottom of the boat.

Let me know if these aren't close enough, I can do better, I need another set of hands and I need to bring the bow down (I use a tractor and put the stand on a stump to make the deck be slanted aft so it's easy to hose off).

I need to figure out which transom-mounted transducer(S) will be best for me. The new unit will be Simrad NSS9 Evo3s. I do bottom fishing and jigging (slow and fast) in coastal waters at 75 to 300 feet rarely go to 500 feet. I'll get one medium Chirp transducers (TM185M or the cheaper one TM150). However, for shallow water (around 100 feet) should I add the 3 in one total scan transducer or Arimar TM165HW ... What do you think about this setup ... any suggestion?

Above my pay grade. I fish in similar waters, shallow for halibut but 100-300 for rockies, lings, salmon (some day tuna). I just went with what the electronics people told me to buy. I have a TM165HW and I like it. I never use the Garmin I have, it's some sidevu thing that I haven't figured out when it is useful.

are you able to clearly see the details of the seabed at the specified depth range? the review suggests that a narrow-angle high chirp transducer would give better details. What do you think? Do I need the TM150M (in addition to TM165HW) to get the best result?

Like I said, above my pay grade. I went with what was suggested to me. I believe it is a compromise, if you get a narrow angle transducer you don't see as many fish but better detail on structure.

If I go out any time soon I can take some screen shots of what I see. I can't see structure at any fast speed, I can see it up to about 12-15 mph.

But my advice is to NOT listen to me, go to a good marine electronics shop, tell them what / how / where you want to fish, and listen to their advice. I really don't know enough to guide you, I've been running this boat, which is essentially my first (working) boat, for less than 6 months. You don't want to listen to me, you want to listen to someone who knows this stuff backwards and forwards.
