I'm getting dinged for property tax on my 228 and they want gross tonnage and net tonnage. Is that even a thing for boats this small? If it is, anyone know what the numbers are for a 2020 228?

Thanks.

Property tax on a boat? What would they think next? Do they tax you on the air you breath?
I think we are very lucky here, we don't even pay property tax on our home as long as it is the principal place of residence.

Luck:

I don't know what else you'd do other than just tell them what the boat weighs. Trailer included with full fuel it's probably bouncing off 6K. Boat alone would be..what? 45-4800? I'm guessing..the Grady site would tell you.

My 2 pennies... Boat info is in the catalogs on the website, motors on theirs. 6lbs for fuel, water and waste capacity. That should be close enough.

Got curious and looked...Weight w/o engine is 3510, so by the time you add the 250 Yam, several hundred lbs of fuel, gear, and "Ling Bait" (whatever that is) your still heading past 4000 lbs+ without the trailer.

we have a boat excise tax in MA. no idea how they calculate it. it goes to the city or town where the boat is on July first. just a scam to take more jing from the citizen if you ask me. just have to bend over and say "thank you mr. state, may I have another..."

I also get nailed on this. Here is the best part,, they tax you when it is kept in the slip or if it is kept on a rented spot within a LA county yard.

If you don't pay it, get ready for a nice lien on your boat. If you sell it, declare it fast with a notarized bill of sale straight to the LA county marine assessor.

You better have a lot of patience because they will take every second of it and ask for more. Ask them for an email address and its about 149 characters.

Get ready to type it wrong and pay another guys bill. Also better follow up because they will deny they ever got the email.

So I thought someone was playing a joke on you until I did some research....

Is it really 4% annually on the assessed value? That’s a killer as it could be used to improve/ upgrade the boat... are there any loopholes, such as business use, or deductions that can be taken for improvements?
