Has anyone ever used a jack plate on a 228G? (Mine is a 93') I need to lift the motor up 5" (4 stroke Yamaha, 560lbs) but I'm a little concerned with the geometry and weight distribution since the engine is mounted on a bracket already. Maybe I'm overthinking this..

What's the reason behind needing to lift the motor 5 inches?

If you trailer any at all, that jack plate will put alot of stress on the bracket by pushing the motor further back.

The motor has a 30" shaft and it's noticeably restrictive when cruising around and won't turn at all under hard acceleration. The old motor had a 25" shaft. I usually keep it in the water from May through November but I did plan on heading out a few times to Ocean City, MD next year which is a 2hr drive. Maybe I can use one of those transom saver contraptions when trailering..

I'd look into changing out the lower unit to a 25" before I'd add a jackplate. Just to much mass hanging on the bracket pushing it further back. Might not have any issues, but I personally wouldn't do it. Change lower or sell 30" motor and put a 25" back on.

Or do what I did, I bought a project 1999 228 Seafarer that was an insurance sale without power and the horns on the pod were broken from impact. Bought a 30” DF250 Suzuki and fabricated a bracket for the pod to raise the motor 5 inches, works great. Keeps the powerhead out of the water even more now.

I was just looking at vertical extension brackets, good information! I'll follow up and post what I end up doing.

Thanks for all the input from everyone, much appreciated.

That’s basically what I did, the bracket I made lifted the motor by 5 more inches on the factory pod
