258 journey towing weight

I am considering purchasing a 258 journey. For those that have trailered a 258, can you provide guidance on the weight for the boat, twin 150's, full fuel, trailer, and gear. Please tell me the type of trailer because steel is certainly heavier than aluminum. Thanks!

I don't have one myself, but you can easily find out most of this info through Grady's site. There, you can find the specs for the boat which will give weights and capacities (gas, water, etc). Simply add the weight of the boat to the tank capacities (do the math for each type of fluid), add your batteries and whatever gear you choose to carry. You can probably do the same with just a little homework on your part for the engines. But figure 400lbs-ish per engine. The trailer will be the hardest, but somewhere between 1,700 to 2,000 for a steel trailer and maybe 400 or 500 less for aluminum.

With auxiliary and primary tanks full, hard top, steel bunk trailer, full water, ice and gear... around 9-9.5k lbs max. Add another 300 lbs for a roller trailer.
Dennis' s numbers for steel vs aluminum sound right for a trailer that big.

Thanks. I have a 208 now. It seems like you need to add about 90% to 100% of the published boat weight to this published weight to get to an approximation of the total rig weight. For example a 4,000 pound boat weight would convert to about 7,600 to 8,000 lb rig for an aluminum trailer. That is my take away. Appreciate the help.

Too many factors come into play to make that a fair statement. Not the least of which is the size/style of the boat to start with. The only real way is to do some 3rd grade math. :lol:

I spent some time to calculate the towing weight of a 258 journey. I had some actual scale weights from my 208 Adventure to use as a comparison. See below. Here is what I came up with. The boat weight to total trailered weight turns out to be a factor of 1.9 to 2. I agree with the feedback that there are too many variables too use this factor as a general rule of thumb. It just seemed to turn out that way for these two examples. If anyone feels that the 8,200 trailered weight for a 258 is off let me know. Appreciate all feedback. It seems to be in the ball park. Thanks for the direction on this.

That looks about right. You might have a third or fourth battery with the twins. Is a hardtop standard or optional? How about a fresh water system or black water holding tank?

Just out of curiosity, how did you come up with that 223lb gear weight? That's pretty specific.

Hmmmm. Great questions. I assumed two batteries and forgot the hardtop is not standard. Good catch. I am a little light on the total weight. As for the gear weight on the 208, I backed into that number. I went to a scale with full fuel tanks and weighed the rig. It came to 5,220 lbs. I accounted for all the major items and the balance was assumed to be gear. I love your attention to details!

Still need to check on the fresh water system and black water holding tank. Good heads up.
