I have posted recently about wanting a 272 Sailfish or Islander for my next boat purchase. I do not hate my Offshore now, but wouldn't mind upgrading so I am not desperate and am looking for that "great deal". I came across a 2000 272 Sailfish that was damaged from a nearby boat fire. The owner just repowered it and was not happy about the damage even with the insurance money. To salvage the rest of the season he bought another 272 and is running that with the original OX66's. He plans on selling the damaged hull and the OX66's either together but not rigged or separate and repowering his new to him hull with his previously purchased new motors off the damaged boat. The damaged boat currently sits with no power in his yard.

The owner said the damage is hard to capture on a photograph and said it is bubbled, but no cracking. He was told his best bet would be to Awlgrip the entire hull instead of repairing the area and risk the colors not matching and was told $8k to do so. I thought that seemed high. I guess my question is what is the hull worth, no trailer, the photos of the damaged side are below and I can't see anything. I am thinking of looking at it but it is just far enough away I don't want to wait either of ours time. If it is "bubbled" could it be wet sanded flat by a professional and call it a day? Also with my boat ADD I am questioning the resale value. I am willing to take on the project if in the end I saved a lot of money and have a great boat. These 272's seem like great boats but every year they get cheaper and cheaper and I can't see it worth it to be into this boat for a lot of money when I could find one that needs nothing, or nothing major at least.

I know its a lot of questions without seeing the actual boat and detailed photos, but I figured this was a good place to start.

Andrew,
I will tell you that the owner you speak of is a standup guy who is very meticulous. The replacement 272 that he purchased was mine. We discussed his damaged boat in detail . He simply did not want to loose the season of boating . He is running my old boat with the OX66 225's which have gone thru extensive routine maintenance by my mechanic this pre season and last. This includes new high-pressure and low pressure pumps, resealed lower units, ultrasonically cleaned injectors, new O2 sensors, water pumps and throttle position sensors. I did not plan to sell the boat but his offer and a deal on a Marlin came at the right time. He is in the auto body business and is very detailed. I would consider his mention of Awlgrip to avoid the possible miss-match in color. The 225's run very well. we spent much of out time offshore with the 272. Yes, he will be mounting his 4strokes on my old hull when the season ends.

My old boat that he purchased can be seen in the for sale section marked as sold.

Best of luck.
Tom

Thanks for the detailed information on the motors! The seller seemed like a great guy and he had nothing to hide. I guess my main concern is figuring out a price where it would be fair for the both of us. It would not make sense to buy the boat and be into it for more money then if I was to just buy one without the damage. There is one on Cape Cod that was listed briefly fr a very reasonable price over the summer. I spoke with that seller and we exchanged phone numbers since I was going to be much more interested in the fall.

Depending on how work plays out this week I might try and take a look at it Thursday, but I am not sure yet. I would like some detailed photos of the damage to show a repair shop for their opinion.

I would consider just using GelCoat. I have purchased over 2 gallons from Grady using my original VIN number and the match came out very good! It can be blended with someone that knows how to do that and I doubt you would notice it much.
