Hey all,

Hoping to finally make a "Big Boat" purchase, been dabling in the small CC's and realized I wanted a bigger twin engine boat. I'd love a 30 Marlin, but cant trailer it, so Im "thinking" 282 is right for me.

Any details on the cabin room for that boat? in particular head room and midship berth lenth? Im 6-5 and am used to hunching over as well as hitting my head, but Im hearing the midships berth is really short.

There are multibles in my price range out there with fourstrokes, (which is about half the price of new!!, Dang GW's are pricey). But my thinking is this time Im gonna pay for a nicer (older) boat vs a midrange newer.

Curious about the visibilty for 282's from the drivers seat, looks limited, I wish I could see all this stuff first hand, but unfortunantly Im about 9000miles from home deployed on a ship in the Persian Gulf right now, so Im internet wishing my next 2 months away, hoping to jump on a sale as soon as I get home.3

Last question is about console area room, I really like express layouts, but would rather have the cabin room, is there room for 3 or 4 under the top of a 282 with enclosure down? Also I see some boats with a wrap around passenger seat, some with dual chairs? Is that changable (ie switch seat for express style side seat?)

You will be very challenged in any cabin boat that length in headroom as you are height impaired !

The liner was redesigned on the 282 over my model so can't say.

At 6ft 1 inch I have several inches over me in the cabin, and the lower berth is long enough. Cam even stand up in head with no contact, not oif I was 6 ft 5 inch.

As a comparison, the Boston Whaler and Pursuit of similar length, my head with cap on did a slight rub on headliner, as I recall. So did the 265 otherwise would have bought that boat brand new when introduced

You may have to up it to the Marlin.

V berth wise, can let feet hang off end, it's head first in V for us.

Your local Grady dealer probably brokers used Gradys, go down and spend all the time you want 'fiiting" inside boat, I'm sure they won't mind these days.
First do the Sailfish then do the Marlin.

Marlin has upsized cabin but similar designed.

The head room will be tight but better than on most other boats of that length. The Marlin has a 10"6" beam which is 1 foot wider than the Sailfish.This may give you more bunk length. I have to sleep in the middle of the "V" birth so my feet can hang over. The port and starboard sides of the "V" have the head wall on one side and the stove cabimet on the other. Visability from the bridge is no problem as long as you don't keep the canvas side curtains on. I never use mine. Good luck finding the right boat of you.

Headroom is a non issue.
The problem is berth length coming to a point at the bow. I'm 6'1" my wife is 5"6". The stbd side bunk is longer than port, we have a real "foot" problem when overnighting.
The 30 bunks are better but I'm not sure if long enuff for you.

Thanks for the info guys, Ive grown acoustom to hitting my head, leaning forward/hunching and having my feet hang off the ends of beds etc, it would seem the V berth is the only area I would be able to sleep on a 282, but I'll learn alot more when I get home in a few months and start shopping for real.

Still curious about towing weights though, I have a 2500HD but its a 6.0gas, can tow 11k, I dont plan on towing alot, but I dont want it to be something that I absolutely couldnt tow (hence a 30Marlin).

From the info Ive seen online, seems 10k is about avg for towing weight for the 282, but like anything it can vary considerbly depending on individual set up.

I am a Naval Aviator (Hornet baby) living in the New Orleans area. I own a 282 and am from North Carolina oringinally where there are a bunch of GW's to say the least. Send me a PM and I will be glad to give you the gouge on any question you have regarding the 282. I believe it is the best all-around towable GW for my family and I.

As for the towing issue, I tow my Sailfish with a 6.0L Diesel Excursion. I have a 3-axle trailer with surge brakes on all 3 axles. I calculated my towing weight once with "full everything" and gear, at around 10.5K. The Excursion handles it great and gets just under 13 mpg. My height with a radar dome up top is 12'5" from the ground and the width is maxed equal to the max beam of the boat. That width is greater than the 8'6" standard towing regulations, but I haven't had any problem going back and forth from the storage unit to Venice, LA for fishing and diving trips.

Couple things..
1.) Make sure whatever trailer you get with your GW is framed and sprung adequately AND has big enough axles to safely support the hull. I will not rant on this again, as I have talked about it in the past, but dealers will sell undersized trailers with the boat as a package in order to attractively price the whole rig. Your used boat of choice may be equipped with one of those trailers.
2.)As mentioned above, your rig will likely be over 10K. Any gas engine pulling that much weight exacerbated by windage will be getting single digit mileage. If you tow very far, your expenses will take an alarming direction and that's BEFORE you fire up the twins at the ramp.
I think your 3/4 will move it fine, if you don't mind dumping the fuel in it.

Its looking more and more like I'll be purchasing a new trailer, most of the boats I see dont have em. Ive gotten several quotes from various dealer/manufactorers on twin & tri-axle, ranging from 10-15k carrying capacity.

Tri-axle with all breaks is where Im leaning, my biggest fear is towing with my gasser, it towed my last boat (Sailfish 2360 @ 6500#s trailering) with ease, Itowed that boat from VA to GA to FL at 75mph up and down the hwy no problem, gas was about 7-8mpg, 9+ if I could sneak in behind a semi that didnt mind me tailgating.

But again, towing for me will be mostly 1/4mile to/from storage to ramp with occasional trips in town for gas, wash and different loading ramps. Heck the biggest haul will probably be from FL to VA on the very first trip when/if I buy one in FL (seems most non-bottom painted 282s are down there).

Now if I can just find one with radar, outriggers, F225's & a companion seat vs chair for under 60k Id be set!!!
