88 Overnighter no alarm.

I recently purchased a 1988 Overnighter 204 and the alarm isn’t working. As a result of an overheat due to a bent water tube to the power head not seating properly in the water pump and a bad grommet on the upper part of the tube I am in the middle of a rebuild. Before pulling the power head I grounded the wire to the sending unit in the heads and plugged off the oil side of the VRO and never got an alarm. There is no audible alarm when turning on the key. Does anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram or first hand knowledge of how this is wired or a way to wire up a new alarm. I am bypassing the VRO and pre mixing so I can run my kicker off the main tank so I just need it for overheat and fuel restrictions. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Motor model and year? Type of control?
What gauges, analog, digital, etc.

Turn on the ignition, put the throttle in gear and then turn the key to the crank position. Does an alarm sound?

86 Johnson 175 model J175txcd. Analog gauges. No alarm sounds with it in gear or any other time. I did some testing trying to get the alarm to sound before pulling the powerhead but couldn’t get it to sound. From what I have read it should have made a noise when the key was turned on. I didn’t think anything of it because my last boat didn’t make a noise either but the alarm would sound and it would go into limp mode if there was a problem. Unfortunately testing is difficult right now due to the wiring harness is disconnected since the powerhead has been removed.

The buzzer is usually part of or mounted near the ignition switch. If you can get to that assembly, you can test the buzzer by applying 12 volts to its leads.
I have zero experience with that motor so I can't really offer more advice.

Thanks for the info. It’s tight getting in there but I found it. I put 12 volts to it and nothing. I will order another and replace it. It looks like it’s been replaced before by someone in a hurry. It was tie wrapped in place and hidden by a bunch of excess wire.

The brown wire is the negative side for the horn activation. The purple is the positive when the key is on. When motor is overheated, the brown is activated and triggers the horn. The test beep is usually activated by the module on the back of the vro pump. No test beep will happen if vro is disconnected. There are 2 model horns. 3 wire and 2 wire. The 3 wire does have a test beep built into the horn. 2 wire does not. When you get it back together, short the brown wire of the temp sensor, or vacuum sensor to ground and the horn should sound when the key is on. If no horn, short the brown at the motor and use a volt meter at the brown and purple (at the horn). There should be 12v there.
