Looking for some info
20 ft of 5/16 chain with a 3/8 shackles
Can that go into the Gypsy on a profish 1000
I would say about 15. ‘ of chain will go through windlass into locker
Or do I have to remove shackles and go in shackleless .. thank you

You want to use a shackle to attach the chain to the line? I don't think that would work and I would be leery of damage/jamming to the gypsy and ratchet arm.

It sounds like you're asking if the shackle from the chain to anchor can go through the gypsy - but I think you're talking about the chain to rope connection, right? Assuming that's what you're talking about, you will do a chain to rope splice - or have it done for you. Ideally, it should be a tapered splice - but that's not always needed.

8-plait is highly recommended, but the rode to chain splice is more complex than three stand. There are directions on the Internet and it takes some practice but it’s not hard and it needs to be tapered.

are you sure 5/16 chain and 9/16 will work? Check the specs of the windlass tha you have. There are variations of gypsies on that model. The chain has to be a specific type, usually G4

8 plait is a completely different animal to splice then 3 strand. It will also have to be a very tight splice as to not get hung up in the windless. Some marinas and marine stores will have a guy on the staff that can do splices and will charge a small fee like 20 bucks or so.

Braid is totally different from 8-plait! Make sure not to confuse the two. Braid will not work on your windlass! I've found that SS chain is smoother and seems to go thru the gypsy easier than galvanized. I like it better, but it may not be as strong for any given size.

I'm using a Lewmar ProFish 700 with 1/4" chain and 1/2" 8-plait. You will need to use a rope to chain splice. It's not difficult to do - there are several examples on the internet.

I first used a tapered splice that goes back on itself. I had trouble with the windlass swallowing the splice - both the factory splice and my re-do splice. I have been using a different splice that weaves up the chain that has been working well.

I would recommend using 8-plait. If you use the splice that I do it's really easy.

Having problems with my rope to chain splice. Cut it off and went back to the tapered splice back over the rope.
