I always seem to have the mid birth bilge pump fire off when I anchor and water gets in the bilge or washing down the cabin sole and water gets in via the weep holes in the corners. On the Marlin water tends to run to middle of the boat. I was doing some cleaning and testing of the aft bilge when I realized it was not pumping. I found a plastic cap had wedged itself in the intake. I think it got wedged as a result of my test, it was just down there waiting to happen. Once I did, the 1700GPH pump and float switch worked fine.
Tip is to always check the bilge for items that could get wedged in the pump - especially small plastic pieces.
