Boat Flags

Just bought my first flag to fly on outrigger. Which outrigger port or starboard is the appropriate one to fly the stars and stirpes? I would assume the port so others in front of the boat would see it on my right side.

The US flag should really be flown from either the bow or the stern. However, these "rules" were developed for yachts, and don't apply very well for sportfishing boats.

While flying the flag from an outrigger may be better than not flying it all, it really has a "non-permanent" air that seems just a bit shoddy. (JMHO)

I fly fish flags, fun flags and our club burgee from the outriggers.

I fly the U.S. Flag from a dedicated flagstaff, midships on the aft end of the hardtop. See below.

Thanks. I will invest in a dedicated flag post for the center of my t-Top rod Holders. I take flying the star and stripes seriously and on land it should not be flown without a light shining on it or in bad weather. Does the same apply for boats. Do you take it down or keep on your boat flying 24 hrs a day. Brian I see you photo do you recall where you can get one fits the T-Top aluminum bar.

Our flag only flies when we are onboard the boat, or when visiting another area even if off briefly. It does not stay up 24 hours a day, but I do put it up in the dark before we head offshore. Nice to see it flying as the sun comes up.

I used a pole socket that was intended for a differnet location, and bolted it to one of the tubing "doublers" on our hardtop frame. Drilled a hole through it, and through the flagstaff, and use a pin with a ball to hold all in place. The pin is on a short tether and stays there.

I will try to take a few photos and post them.

Birdsall makes a nice flagstaff that fits in a rodholder. I have seen them on hardtops and they look great.
 
When we clear Customs in the Bahamas, we must fly a Bahamas Courtesy Flag while in the country. I'm not positive of exactly where it must fly, but I made my own flag "pole" using PVC pipe that will then slide over my VHF antenna on my hardtop.

:wink: Great info guys, but my original question was who has a selection of flags available. General flag shops and outlet stores only offer select few. I fly my US flag off bow rail in center of the pulpit and the MD flag to starboard - US in middle and state flag goes to the left when viewed from front/oncoming vessel. I want to hoist some others such as "Fish or Cut Bait" onto the outriggers when underway. Looking for smaller ones - less than 10" x ?"
