Bracket question

My new to me 87 offshore I have owned for about a year know. A few weeks ago I put boat on trailer and removed plug from bracket I got about a couple gallons of ugly water then stuck screwdriver in hole I realized there is a type of foam in the bracket. I let it sit a day or so they closed it up and put back in water for a week. Upon removal I was standing behind boat on ramp and noticed this perfect hole in rear of bracket peeing water. I am assuming this should be water tight and guessing I need to pressurize bracket and check and seal all leaks. Can anyone tell me more about this bracket?

That's the original Springfield bracket. I have one on my '87 228.

I pulled mine off and powder coated it then re sealed it. You might want to do the same, when it came off the transom, water and sand gushed out. I epoxied the bolt holes that attach it to the hull and used 4200 to seal it back on the boat.

If you don't want to mess with that big of a project you are correct~ pressurize with dye in the water so you can chase down the leak(s), but I would be concerned about water intrusion in the transom through the bolt holes.

Thanks for response. There are several layers of anti fouling paint on this. Is this not fiberglass you can powder coat fiberglass?

No, you cant powder coat fiberglass.
I am not clear if youare saying that your bracket is aluminum or it is fiberglass.
It looks like the bracket was painted with the same bottom paint as the hull. If that is true and the hull was painted with copper based paint and the bracket is metal it is very possible that galvanic corrosion has eaten through the bracket. If so, the small hole may be the tip of the iceberg.. Tappimh with a small hard tool like a small hammer may show thin spots in the metal shell.

If the bracket is fiberglass, you have a better chance of being able to make repairs that will last.

Looks like aluminum. Yes, clean it off real well and assess. Get it down to bare (or at least bare-ish) metal.

The bracket on my 95 225 had some minor pitting and before I recoated the bottom, I sanded down some of the pitted areas and used JB Weld marine to fill in some of the voids.
Might be something to consider until a more permanent solution is or might be required.

That’s the route I probably will go after a through cleaning to see how bad it is

My bracket has a hole in it. I bought some job weld and I’m planning on patching it.

I’m a little worried the bracket is not going to be safe.

I stripped it and I’m planning on priming and painting, but the hole has me a little concerned.

Thoughts?

Take it to a welder. Heli arc it.
