My 2008 Gulfstream 232 has canvas/eisenglass in 2 panels over the glass windshield. When I unsnap the canvas and roll it up during the summer, it is much easier to see .In bad weather I unroll the eisenglass panels, but it is impossible for me to refasten the snaps on the bottom of the canvas to the top frame of the glass windshield. Is this normal? My dealer recommends using hot water to restretch the canvas .

yes it's normal to shrink. however, my '02 232 had zipper sections in the front panels so you could unzip and roll them up. you did not unsnap the panel. you may have seen them referred to as "smiley faces". is this no longer part of the canvas on the new models? ron

I unzip the 2 panels; I unsnap the bottom of the 2 panels from the windshield; I roll up the 2 panels.I can never fasten the bottom snaps when I unroll the 2 panels--Charley

just unzip them and roll them up - that's what the zippers in the panel are for. don't unsnap the part that attaches to the top of the windshield. when you're done, unroll them and zip them back up. that should do it. when you unsnap the windshield parts, the panels will shrink. i always had to wait for some good sun in the spring before everything went back together smoothly. ron

this assumes they have the zipper smiley faces. do they still have them?

Ron--the snaps are on the bottom of the panels. To roll them UP, you must first unsnap the Bottom of the panels,, where the snaps attach to the top of the windshield. They can't be rolled up without unsnapping -Charley

sounds like they are no longer installing the zip panels. maybe someone here knows why.

in the absence of a valid reason for them not to be there, you could have a local canvas guy put in one on each side. that way you can roll them up without unsnapping. (i used this feature consistently on nice days) the other option is to deal with the resnap issue (or don't roll them up). i don't think i like that.

anybody have some observations on this?

Yes I do..
I have a 2007 Gulfstream and I had the same problem with my two front pieces. I couldn't snap the bottom part onto the windshield frame after I removed them once.
I took them to the canvas guy that works with Twin Cities Marine and one of the girls in the shop lengthened the material somehow and I've had no more problem.

Hi
I am having the same problem with my new Freedom 255 (June 2010). It has the hardtop and the front has one canvas over the walk through area then one over the helm and one over the passanger area. The side canvas/eisenglass still have the "zip" up area to open and roll up the eisenglass and that works well as you do not have to unsnap the canvas, but this is a fairly large canvas and can accomodate the zipper section. This is not on the front 3 peices. You need to unsnap the bottom then roll them up. There are straps and fastners to attach the rolled up canvas/eisenglass and keep it nicely up and out of the way, this is part of the design. This is brand new canvas so it is stiff to be sure but....once I rolled it up, as you have stated it is "impossible" to reclip these to the windshield. I have brought this to the attention of my dealer and is going to be looked at under warranty when the boat goes into storage. This is my second Grady and canvas snaps are/have been an issue on both boats. This one is more of an issue as in rain or bad weather when I want to run with the canvas down and secured, it is impossible to do. I can get some done but with the rest, the wind and rain pushes the eisenglass into the cabin area. If the front canvas had the internal zip out and roll up sections as on the sides, this would help but this should not be an issue. The eisenglass is designed to be rolled up and that is how it should work without worrying if you will be able to put them down without them working as they should. I will keep you posted on what will be done with mine as something definetly needs to be done.

Ed is right..it needs to be addressed.
I didn't have any patience, so as stated in my post above, I went to a canvas shop and had it adjusted. I can't remember the cost, but it wasn't much. Took the girl a couple hours, I think.
By the time you wait for Grady or the canvas-maker or whoever to analyze the problem and authorize repair/adjustment, half the summer is gone.

Ed--you pay over $100.000 for a boat thats been out for a few years, you shouldn't have this kind of problem--please keep me posted on your progress--Charley
