Seafarer 228-G helm compass liquid seems to be evaporating - causing dial to go all over the place - can it be topped off?

The seal has been broken and will need to be resealed as well.
I didn't bother with mine, just replaced it. Mine had an air bubble develop up top.
Don't recall if its a DIYer job. I do believe factory can do it, may not be cost effective though.

GW uses Ritchie compasses based in Pembroke MA. My previous 282 developed an air bubble after 3 years. The firm indicated the compass was under warranty for 5 years. They took it back to repair and gave me a new one for no charge from their Pembroke office. Service centers can be found at:

They also offer molded plastic covers for a reasonable cost if the compass is exposed to the elements.

They now use a fluid called Isopar L® which they say has similar properties and some added benefits over mineral spirits. Exxon Mobil has the trademark on Isopar L®. They say it can be mixed together with the mineral spirits and recommend if you have a flat top compass to test the fluid to see if it's mineral spirits or isopropyl alcohol.wizard said:

I have a newly purchased quart of Ritchie Compass Fluid. I will send to you for half price if you are interested. The fluid can be entered through the side of the compass. You just need to unscrew the compass from the console and lift out to add more fluid.
