We’re concerned about hull issues for this age model given what we read about the wood construction; will survey identify those issues? Have seen suggestions to look for owner-installed extras that could have been poorly installed and sealed-up. Any tips on this boat or the like for novice Ches. Bay area boaters would be much appreciated!

Depends on the prior owner(s) and how it has been treated. Ask how long they have had it and how they used it… trailer or slip… who has done the maintenance…what issues are currently known and what issues have they fixed. Etc
survey is a good step and it will likely provide you some negotiating power. Don’t fall in love with the boat and don’t overpay as there will very likely be some issues to spend on if you buy it.
used boat market has been crazy for 2yrs and hopefully will come down to earth but might be some more time for that.

Get a complete survey for sure. It likely wont be the things you can see that pose the biggest risk. Core damage, engine weakness and functional issues best detected by someone that knows what to look for.
Given the vintage you are looking at, I’d expect something’s to need correction.

Are you looking for an Overnighter which the last model year was 1992 or an Adventure which is the 93-current 20 foot W/A? I have fished both and though similar there are differences. Adventure (1993-current) has the SeaV2 hull. which many say rides better. I have a 96 Adventure and fished on my father in laws Overnighter which I think rides better. The Overnighter can be notched transom out board, I/O or some not so commonly came with a full transom and bracket like a Seafarer 228. Adventure is notch transom only. Both boats do ride well though and can take more than the average person can in rough water. I think 150 hp is a little underpowered for my taste on either boat but more than a 200 is overkill. 175-200 is ideal. A competent survey will pick up any issues. They can have transom issues like any older Grady. My Adventure fishbox cabin and anchor hatches are chipping away. I had them redone once now I'm looking for an alternative material. The adventure can get a soft spot on the large main hatch over the gas tank had this issue as well. I had it recored when I bought the boat in 2009 and for the last 12 years it has been rock solid.
