What are folks using to connect up constant power to a radio so that presets are not lost when you shut off the main battery switch?...looking for a solution other then running a wire from the console to the battery?...

I assume you always turn your battery switch(es) off, so need a "always hot" connection. You should find power to the input side of the bilge pump switch is "always hot", as there should be a non-switched lead from the battery to that switch. You could tap off that feeder to get your 'always on' power. (Usually to a yellow wire to the radio).

Presets and DSC information is stored in non-volatile memory on most units.

You don't need a constant power source and keeping your radio connected to on open 12 V source during storage is not a good idea.

My radio loses its presets. It has a seperate power lead for the memory.
I was thinking of adding a small battery to the electronics box and put a solar panel on the hardtop to keep it charged.
Maybe a new radio would be cheaper and easier. All my other electronics keep their settings.

Are you talking about a stereo or a VHF radio? Stereo's will lose presets without battery, VHF's should not...

Sounds like stereo.... There's a bilge pump foward (under cabin floor of my 226). I would run a fused 16gauge wire from it to the radio. It's a very, very low draw to keep the memory in a car stereo. If the boat is winterized out of the water, you should unhook or pull the batteries anyway.

Mine does. Yellow wire to "always on" source.

But I don't turn off my battery switches either. No need to with the boat on shore power, high quality battery charger, and alarm notification if AC power lost or DC power below a setpoint.

You can run a 2/c #16 awg back to the battery directly and add a fuse here, and mark it accordingly.

well i got the radio in the mail its one of those new small round Jensens that fit in a 3 inch guage hole..evidently it has a built in memorie and doesnt need the yellow wire to be powered all the time...matter of fact it only has a red and black wire!
