I am looking for a trailer for my 272 Sailfish. I have to have the boat hauled in the spring because it is so high on the stands I would't dare trying to lower it onto a trailer for what the cost of the haul would be. I have been keeping my eyes open for a nice used trailer before I pull the trigger on a new one. It will be just used once or twice a year back and forth a short distance to the mooring.

All winter long on my local CL there has been a 28-30' 2012 Venture tandem galvy 10,000# bunk trailer for sale. I want to call and make an offer and I am wondering what that trailer cost when it was new in 2012. It reportedly has only been in the water once in 2012 and sitting since. I know a new Venture aluminum trailer is a little over $4000 depending on the dealer and was't sure how different the galvanized trailer was when they offered them in price, I can only seem to find new aluminum trailers from venture now that size.

I know Venture is not the best of trailers out there, but for my needs I think it should work well. The other trailers I was considering if I go new was from boattrailersdirect.com.

Thanks

Andrew

I'm a venture dealer and sell many venture trailers.

The cost of a 2012 is the same as today. Venture prices go up April 2nd, 2015 and the triple axle trailers you're talking about will be going up in price.

Galvy is about $75 cheaper than aluminum. Those fancy aluminum wheels add cost too.

I'd be amazed if you can get a 10K pound triple trailer for $4100, $4300...... If so buy one for sure! There's nothing better than a new trailer

Most people want cheap and that's what they order. Venture trailer are real nice if you get one with options. I use a 7900 galvy bunk under my work boat and it's great.

Good luck.

I agree with the above regarding pricing. A new 10,000lb trailer (even an 'inexpensive' one like Venture) is nowhere near the $4K mark. One thing you want to be sure of, if you go the Venture route, is that the wheels are tracking true. I also work in the business and a few years ago we had a rash of Venture's that were wearing tires out in only a few hundred miles. So much so that we stopped ordering them. Instead, we stuck with Tidewater for our 'entry level' trailer. We had been using them, already, for quite some time anyways.

You also need to check on whether or not that trailer has brakes on all axles - it might have been ordered as a "cost buster" trailer (especially given the type of use this one apparently had). Regardless of whether or not a particular state's law requires brakes on all axles, it's a bad idea to trailer, especially larger boats, without brakes all around. Although, given your anticipated use, you might be OK.

Another thing to check on - especially with trailers that have sat for long periods of time... brakes. When a trailer doesn't get used, the brakes (systems) tend to be inoperative and can require replacement. It's one of those things where it's better to use it. Non-use equals non-work. Not all the time, obviously, but the chances are better than not.

About halfway down is the VATB-8725 model. I know is has traditional springs and not torsion axels and I would have to find out about brakes. I am traveling to the outer banks in April and this dealer is on the way so I was debating on ordering one for pickup then. If this price is accurate and the trailer would work for me is does not seem like a bad deal.

I am going to call on the local 2012 used one I saw on CL, but it would have to be priced accordingly to make it worth not buying new.

Just got a reply from EMI. Brakes on one axel, mag rims, and the 8750 carrying capacity for $3675. He did mention the price increase and said he is not sure what it will be. If I do not find another trailer local I am thinking this might be a good option since I will be traveling that way in April anyways and it would not be out of the way to pick up.

Even without brakes all around, that sounds like a REALLY good deal. There must be different levels of pricing that's given to different dealers - I'm not at the office right now, but I don't think my price/cost is even that cheap.

Not that it's a big deal (and won't change the price by much), but... drum brakes or disc brakes?

I am going to have to guess drum brakes. A few of the other trailers on his website specifies disk, so unless otherwise noted the price he gave me must be drum. The 2012 trailer I saw local to me is $3100obo, Unless the seller is willing to go to $2500 I think I would rather the brand new aluminum trailer with the mag wheels, even if the price goes up for when I am able to pick the trailer up it should still be under $4k.

OK, I can be a PITA at times but looking at the website, you are getting perhaps AXEL Rose of AC/DC. What you really need is an AXLE:)

That's the exact same trailer i bought for our 268 searay. I got the mag wheels on mine and came with disk brakes on both axles and front bunks. Bought mine in 2012 for 3100 bucks and i bought from the same place

Just got off the phone and placed the order through EMI Marine for the brand new Venture trailer. It actually does have disk brakes on one axle, mag rims, and front target bunks for $3770. He is honoring the current pricing with my deposit for pickup on April 25th on my return from NC. I called a few other dealers and they couldn't touch his price. EMI told me they are 1 hour away from where they are built so he doesn't have to pay shipping and he prices them to sell in volume.

I have never had a new boat trailer before and always seemed to be working on used ones so I am looking forward to this!

Going with a new trailer is smart, excellent work!!

You need to order a trailer with options though. The way that trailer is built you'll be one of the venture slammers in a couple of years.

You'll have to torque those aluminium wheels every time you fuel up your truck. Go Galvy.

You can't legally drive that trailer through CT and I think NY the way it's sold to you. Anything over 4k needs brakes on every axle in RI. If you want to stop and be legal you need disk brakes on all 4 wheels. They even offer a Stainless brake package.

ask about LED lights, poly covers, dual wheel jack, torsion axles, spare tire mount, spare tire, extra brakes and SS brakes. They also have radial tire upgrades and longer tongues to keep your truck out of the salt water and to get the bunks deeper underwater.

Here is the DMV trailer requirements for New York State.

That says brakes enough to control the trailer, and I would think stating that the manufacture built the trailer with one set would be enough to argue that point. Also I am not the biggest fan of surge brakes anyways, I have never had luck with them. I have a full sized GMC with the duramax/Allison which is equipped with a transmission brake which does a great job slowing heavy trailers. The boat will not be any heavier than my bobcat on the dump trailer and and not too worried about it. The boat will travel about 3 miles twice a year on it, maybe 4 times if a mid season repair is needed. I was looking for used trailers just because of how little I will use it, but I figured even this budget new trailer would be far better than a 5-10 year old used one.

Wish I didn't have to wait until April to pick it up and hope this snow will melt soon so I can get started with some cleaning and upgrading! The snow at my house was almost over my 4' fence before we got a little melting the other day, I'm officially done with winter!!!
