I would like to install an Armstrong dive ladder, 4 steps swing-style, to replace the stern ladder that came with my 2005 Grady White Marlin.

For installation, there is a facing plate that needs to go inside against the transom. Not a lot of room to work and access from the aft hatch is difficult but possible perhaps with an extension on my socket driver. Maybe. Looking inside, there is some metal support structure that I need to avoid, etc. On the outside, it looks like there is room between the lift bolt and the HIN to install the ladder bracket.

To make the job easier, I'm wondering if I can install an access port in the space where the current ladder lies flat, just forward from the transom? I'm concerned about cutting into wires or support structure, for example. I think it looks clear, but not certain.

Any additional thoughts or help or recommendations about installing a heavy-duty dive ladder are welcome. I need a heavy-duty, user-friendly ladder.

PS I saw a similar request in the forums from many years ago. No replies!

If you could post some pictures it would be a GREAT help. Tough to answer the questions without them.

Here's a picture

The ladder hardware would mount just about 8 inches up from bottom on the transom, to the left of the eye-bolt. A facing plate goes against the inside of the transom. A real awkward place to try and work, obviously. I'm thinking of cutting an access port in the space just forward of the existing ladder's first step, the open space where the ladder is currently laying, in stored position. I guess if I do it carefully, at worst I end up with an access port and cover. At best, there's enough room to install the facing plate against the inside of the transom.

Here's a link to Armstrong. The ladder I want is the SL4-48. The page also has a picture of the mounting bracket.

Re: Dive Ladder Installation: SOLUTION

Contacted Grady White and they suggested going in from the inside wall of the engine well. It was not an easy installation (hired it out) but the result was excellent. Biggest challenge was placement of the facing plate so that when you drill the four holes you miss the stringer. Be careful not to go too high or the outside hinge will cover the HIN. Not a lot of space to work. And in the end the 5200 caused its usual mess. The Armstrong 4-step swing ladder and bracket function efficiently. Great design and makes getting back in the boat with dive gear still on a breeze. Original ladder just doesn't cut it, except I guess for occasional use.

Pictures, one more coming later when I take just the hinge without the ladder inserted.
