Drain Extender in the live well

Does anyone know why GW puts those rubber ends on the PVC pipes that screw into the live wells. I always have a heck of a time getting them to screw in and stay straight. I was thingking of making a new one with a PVC solid end(If I could find threads that matched) that would screw in and seal with a rubber gasket of o ring to the base fitting in the live well. Has anyone tried this -

Legend: The stand pipe that came with my 2005 Grady had hard plastic threads. A more recent replacement has the soft rubber threads. Grady factory may be able to point you to the manufacturer of the previous plastic threads.

The rubber end is there for a reason. If you look closely you will see several small holes in the rubber end. When the overflow pipe is screwed in, these holes are designed to be above the bottom and allow a small amount of water to escape. So as you place fish in the livewell they will eventually poop. All this poop contains ammonia which is deadly to fish (and your bait fish) The poop falls to the bottom and it pulled out with the water that goes through these little holes in the rubber portion of the tube. You can certainly make a new tube out of PVC, but make sure you put a couple holes or slots in the bottom to allow for the poop flush. Otherwise your nice fresh bait will be dead in no time.
